مَنْ كَثُرَ حَمْلُهُ نَبُلَ۔
One whose tolerance increases becomes noble.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Tolerance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure family, his noble companions, and all the righteous Muslims.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Man kathura hamluhu nabula.
This Hadith can be translated as,
One whose tolerance increases becomes noble.
Let us delve into the meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word "haml" in Arabic refers to the burden or load that one carries. It can be understood metaphorically as the difficulties, challenges, and responsibilities that a person faces in life. The word "nabula" means to become noble, honorable, or esteemed. Therefore, this Hadith teaches us that when a person's ability to bear and endure hardships increases, they attain a higher level of nobility and honor.
This concept is beautifully reflected in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286: (2:286)
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...
This verse reminds us that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, never places a burden upon us that is beyond our capacity to handle. He knows our strengths and weaknesses better than we do, and He tests us accordingly.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Inshirah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (94:5-6)
Verily, with hardship, there is relief. Verily, with hardship, there is relief
This verse emphasizes that every difficulty and trial we face is accompanied by ease and relief. It is through these challenges that we grow, develop resilience, and become stronger individuals.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the importance of embracing and enduring hardships with patience and perseverance. When we face difficulties with a positive attitude and steadfastness, we not only overcome them but also elevate our character and status in the eyes of Allah.
For example, let us consider the story of Prophet Job (Ayub) (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who faced severe trials and tribulations. Despite losing his wealth, health, and family, he remained patient and steadfast in his faith. As a result, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) restored his health, granted him wealth, and blessed him with a new family. Prophet Job's endurance and patience in the face of immense hardship elevated his status and made him a symbol of resilience and faith.
Similarly, when we face challenges in our lives, whether they are personal, professional, or spiritual, we should remember that they are opportunities for growth and development. By increasing our tolerance and endurance, we not only become stronger individuals but also gain the admiration and respect of others.
Moreover, this Hadith also highlights the immense wisdom and knowledge of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). He understood that true nobility is not measured by wealth, power, or social status, but by one's ability to bear the burdens of life with patience and grace. Imam Ali's wisdom and knowledge were unparalleled, and his teachings continue to guide and inspire Muslims to this day.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that increasing our tolerance and endurance in the face of hardships leads to nobility and honor. By embracing challenges with patience and perseverance, we not only overcome them but also elevate our character and status in the sight of Allah. May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to bear our burdens with grace and become noble individuals.
