مَنْ عَمِلَ بِالعَدْلِ حَصَّنَ اللّهُ مُلْكَهُ۔
Whoever acts justly, Allah fortifies his kingdom.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ عَمِلَ بِالعَدْلِ حَصَّنَ اللّهُ مُلْكَهُ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of justice in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve into the deeper meanings of the key words in this Hadith.
The word (adl) "عَدْلِ" refers to justice, fairness, and equity. It is the act of giving everyone their due rights and treating them impartially. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam, as it upholds the balance and harmony in society. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) Himself is the epitome of justice, and He commands us to act with justice in all aspects of our lives.
The phrase (Allah fortifies his kingdom) "حَصَّنَ اللّهُ مُلْكَهُ" signifies the divine protection and support that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grants to those who uphold justice. It implies that when a person acts justly, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) safeguards and strengthens their position, authority, and possessions. This divine fortification is not limited to material wealth or power but encompasses all aspects of a person's life, including their reputation, relationships, and inner peace.
The concept of justice is deeply rooted in the Quran, and numerous verses highlight its significance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hadid (57:25),
Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice.
This verse emphasizes that the messengers were sent with the divine message and the balance (al-mizan) to establish justice among people. It further emphasizes that justice is essential for the well-being and stability of society.
Another verse that supports the Hadith is found in Surah An-Nisa (4:135), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.
This verse encourages Muslims to uphold justice even if it goes against their own interests or the interests of their loved ones. It highlights the importance of justice as a moral obligation and a means of seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Reflecting on the Hadith, we can understand that acting with justice not only benefits individuals but also has wider implications for society. When justice prevails, trust is established, conflicts are resolved, and social cohesion is strengthened. Conversely, the absence of justice leads to oppression, inequality, and societal unrest. Therefore, it is incumbent upon Muslims to strive for justice in all their dealings, whether personal, social, or political.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, emphasized the importance of justice throughout his life. He implemented justice during his caliphate, ensuring that the rights of all individuals, regardless of their social status, were protected. His famous saying,
People are either your brothers in faith or your equals in humanity,
exemplifies his commitment to justice and equality.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the significance of justice in Islam. By acting with justice, we not only please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) but also fortify our own positions and contribute to the well-being of society. Let us strive to be just in all our actions, following the example set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble family, including Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to uphold justice and establish a just society.
