الدُّنيا تُسْلِمُ۔
This world betrays.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الدُّنيا تُسْلِمُ۔" This is translated into English as, "This world betrays." Let us delve into the connotation of this statement in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (dunya) "دُنْيَا" refers to the temporal world, the material realm that we currently reside in. It encompasses the worldly possessions, desires, and pursuits that often distract us from our ultimate purpose in life. The word (tuslimu) "تُسْلِمُ" can be translated as "betrays" or "deceives." It implies that the world, with all its allure and promises, ultimately leads us astray and fails to fulfill its promises of true happiness and contentment.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that shed light on the deceptive nature of this worldly life. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20),
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.
This verse emphasizes that the pleasures and attractions of this world are temporary and fleeting. They may bring temporary joy and satisfaction, but ultimately they wither away, leaving us empty and disillusioned. The Quran further reminds us in Surah Al-Imran (3:185),
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.
These verses highlight the transitory nature of worldly pursuits and the ultimate reality that awaits us in the Hereafter. The world may offer temporary pleasures, but true fulfillment and eternal happiness can only be found in the obedience and remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's statement, "This world betrays," serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual journey and not become ensnared by the distractions and temptations of this world. It urges us to reflect upon the impermanence of worldly possessions and to focus on the eternal rewards that await us in the Hereafter.
When we become too attached to the material aspects of this world, we risk neglecting our spiritual growth and losing sight of our ultimate purpose. We may become consumed by greed, envy, and materialistic desires, which can lead to a spiritual decline and distance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's thought-provoking Hadith also serves as a motivation for Muslims to seek knowledge and wisdom. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and his words hold great significance for us. By reflecting on the deceptive nature of this world, we are encouraged to seek knowledge that will guide us towards the path of righteousness and enable us to navigate the challenges and trials of this worldly life.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "This world betrays" serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual journey and not become ensnared by the temporary allurements of this world. It urges us to seek knowledge, reflect upon the transitory nature of worldly possessions, and focus on the eternal rewards that await us in the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand the true nature of this world and guide us on the path of righteousness.
