عَلَيْكَ بِالعَقْلِ فَلا مالَ أعْوَدُ مِنْهُ۔
You must develop your intellect, for there is no wealth more profitable than it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of developing one's intellect. Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to better understand its connotation.
The word (Alika) "عَلَيْكَ" in Arabic means "upon you" or "upon yourself." It signifies a personal obligation and responsibility. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and knowledge, is advising Muslims to take it upon themselves to prioritize the development of their intellect.
The word (Al-'Aql) "العَقْلِ" refers to intellect or rationality. It encompasses the ability to reason, understand, and make sound judgments. The intellect is a divine gift bestowed upon human beings, enabling them to distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then states, (Fala mal a'wadu minhu)
فَلا مالَ أعْوَدُ مِنْهُ
which translates to
for there is no wealth more profitable than it.
Here, the word (Mal) "مالَ" refers to wealth or possessions. However, it is important to note that the wealth being referred to in this Hadith is not material wealth, but rather the wealth of intellect and knowledge.
To further understand the significance of developing one's intellect, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269):
He grants wisdom to whom He pleases, and whoever is granted wisdom is indeed given a great wealth.
This verse highlights that true wealth lies in wisdom and intellect, as it is a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is through the development of our intellect that we can attain true prosperity and success in this world and the hereafter.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:14), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
And We gave to David, Solomon. An excellent servant, indeed he was one repeatedly turning back [to Allah].
This verse highlights the story of Prophet Solomon (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was blessed with immense wisdom and intellect. His ability to make wise decisions and judgments was a testament to the value and importance of developing one's intellect.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we can understand that the pursuit of knowledge and the development of our intellect is not only a means of personal growth but also a means of attaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By utilizing our intellect, we can make informed decisions, seek truth, and fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims.
Moreover, the Hadith reminds us that the wealth of intellect is invaluable and everlasting. Material wealth may come and go, but the knowledge and wisdom acquired through the development of our intellect will benefit us in this world and the hereafter. It is a wealth that cannot be depleted or taken away.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the development of their intellect. By seeking knowledge, understanding, and making sound judgments, we can attain true wealth and prosperity. Let us strive to cultivate our intellects and utilize them in the pursuit of truth, righteousness, and the betterment of ourselves and society as a whole. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and benefit from the wealth of intellect.
