كَفاكَ مِنْ عَقْلِكَ ما أبانَ لَكَ رُشْدَكَ مِنْ غَيِّكَ۔
It suffices for your intellect to distinguish for you right guidance from error.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
كَفاكَ مِنْ عَقْلِكَ ما أبانَ لَكَ رُشْدَكَ مِنْ غَيِّكَ۔
This Hadith is a enlightening Hadith that highlights the power and sufficiency of the human intellect in distinguishing between right guidance and error.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (your intellect) "عَقْلِكَ" refers to the faculty of reasoning and understanding that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon every human being. It is through our intellect that we are able to comprehend and differentiate between truth and falsehood.
The word (to distinguish) "أبانَ" means to make clear or evident. It implies that our intellect has the ability to clearly discern and recognize the path of righteousness from the path of misguidance. It is a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that enables us to navigate through the complexities of life and make informed decisions.
The word (right guidance) "رُشْدَكَ" refers to the path of righteousness and guidance that leads to the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encompasses following the teachings of the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and adhering to the principles of justice, compassion, and righteousness.
On the other hand, the word (error) "غَيِّكَ" refers to the path of misguidance and deviation from the truth. It represents actions and beliefs that are contrary to the teachings of Islam and lead one away from the path of righteousness.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 269:
He grants wisdom to whom He pleases; and he to whom wisdom is granted indeed receives a benefit overflowing; but none will grasp the Message but men of understanding.
This verse emphasizes the importance of wisdom and understanding, which are closely related to the intellect mentioned in the Hadith. It highlights that true guidance is attained by those who possess intellect and understanding.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 22, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.
This verse emphasizes the significance of using our intellect and reasoning abilities to distinguish between right and wrong. It implies that those who neglect or misuse their intellect are considered the worst of creatures in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that our intellect is sufficient to guide us towards the right path. It is a powerful tool that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us, and it is our responsibility to utilize it to seek knowledge, understand the teachings of Islam, and make righteous choices.
By relying on our intellect, we can distinguish between truth and falsehood, between right guidance and error. It is through the proper use of our intellect that we can discern the teachings of the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and apply them in our lives. This Hadith encourages us to constantly seek knowledge, reflect upon the Quran, and use our intellect to make informed decisions that align with the principles of Islam.
Furthermore, this Hadith serves as a reminder that we should not blindly follow others without exercising our own intellect. It urges us to critically analyze and evaluate the information presented to us, ensuring that it aligns with the teachings of Islam. It empowers us to question and seek clarification when faced with conflicting opinions or interpretations.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the power and sufficiency of our intellect in distinguishing between right guidance and error. It encourages us to utilize our intellect to seek knowledge, understand the teachings of Islam, and make informed decisions. By doing so, we can navigate through the complexities of life and strive towards righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to use our intellect wisely and guide us on the path of righteousness.
