اَلوَقارُ يُنْجِدُ (نَتيجَةُ) الحِلْمِ۔
Solemnity supports (or gives rise to) forbearance.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Calmness and Solemnity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الوَقارُ يُنْجِدُ (نَتيجَةُ) الحِلْمِ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
Solemnity supports (or gives rise to) forbearance.
Let us first examine the key words in this Hadith. (al-waqar) "الوَقارُ" refers to solemnity, dignity, or nobility. It signifies an elevated state of character and behavior, where one carries oneself with grace, respect, and honor. (yunjidu) "يُنْجِدُ" means to support, strengthen, or give rise to. And (al-hilm) "الحِلْمِ" translates to forbearance, patience, or tolerance.
To understand the connotation of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes the importance of noble character and righteousness in the sight of Allah. It highlights that true nobility lies not in one's lineage or social status, but in one's piety, righteousness, and moral conduct. Therefore, the concept of (al-waqar) "الوَقارُ" mentioned in the Hadith aligns with the Quranic notion of true nobility.
Furthermore, the Quran repeatedly emphasizes the virtue of forbearance and patience. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse encourages Muslims to seek assistance through patience and prayer, highlighting the significance of forbearance in facing challenges and difficulties.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautifully connects the concepts of solemnity and forbearance. When one possesses a sense of dignity and nobility in their character, it naturally leads to the cultivation of forbearance. This is because a person who carries themselves with grace and honor is less likely to be easily provoked or react impulsively in difficult situations.
For example, imagine a person who maintains their composure and remains calm in the face of adversity. They respond to insults or criticism with patience and understanding, rather than retaliating with anger or aggression. This person's solemnity, their dignified demeanor, enables them to exercise forbearance and respond in a manner that is pleasing to Allah.
Conversely, if one lacks solemnity and allows themselves to be easily swayed by their emotions, they may struggle to exhibit forbearance. Their reactions may be impulsive, driven by anger or frustration, rather than guided by wisdom and patience. Therefore, the Hadith teaches us that cultivating a sense of solemnity in our character can serve as a foundation for developing forbearance.
The consequences of embodying this Hadith in our lives are profound. By practicing solemnity and forbearance, we not only improve our own character but also contribute to a harmonious society. Our interactions with others become more respectful and compassionate, fostering unity and understanding among Muslims.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the exemplary character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His knowledge, wisdom, and patience were unparalleled. He demonstrated solemnity in his every action and word, and his forbearance in the face of immense challenges serves as an inspiration for all Muslims.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that solemnity supports forbearance. By embodying a sense of dignity and nobility in our character, we can cultivate the virtue of patience and tolerance. This Hadith aligns with the Quranic teachings of true nobility and the importance of forbearance in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice solemnity and forbearance, and may we strive to emulate the noble character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
