(Ghurar al-Hikam: Obedience And Compliance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
طُوبى لِمَنْ حافَظَ عَلى طاعَةِ رَبِّهِ۔
This can be translated as,
Blessed is the one who observes obedience to his Lord.
In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of safeguarding and maintaining obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the significance behind this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and concepts it presents. The word (hafiz) "حافَظَ" means to safeguard, protect, or preserve. It implies a continuous effort and dedication to maintain and uphold something. In this context, it refers to the act of preserving and safeguarding obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The term (ta'ah) "طاعَةِ" refers to obedience, submission, and compliance. It encompasses all acts of worship and adherence to the commands and prohibitions of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It includes acts of prayer, fasting, charity, and all other forms of worship prescribed by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the significance of obedience and its rewards. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 4:69)
And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger - those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.
This verse highlights that those who observe obedience to Allah and His Messenger will be rewarded with the company of the prophets, the martyrs, and the righteous. It emphasizes the immense honor and blessings that await those who dedicate themselves to obedience.
Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Imran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 4:80)
And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger - those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor - of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.
This verse reiterates the reward for those who adhere to obedience, emphasizing that they will be in the company of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs, and the righteous. It further emphasizes the honor and blessings that await those who dedicate themselves to obedience.
