بِغَلَبَةِ العاداتِ الوُصُولُ إلى أشْرَفِ المَقاماتِ۔
Through overpowering [evil] habits, there is attainment of lofty stations.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Habit)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Through overpowering [evil] habits, there is attainment of lofty stations.
Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (ghalabah) "غَلَبَةِ" in the Hadith refers to overpowering or conquering. It implies the act of prevailing over something, particularly in the context of habits. It signifies the need to overcome negative habits and tendencies that hinder our spiritual growth and prevent us from reaching higher levels of righteousness.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of self-control and overcoming one's desires in several verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 50:16)
And We have certainly created man and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein
This verse highlights that Allah is fully aware of the inner struggles and temptations that humans face. It reminds us that we must strive to overpower our negative inclinations and align our actions with the guidance of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, Allah recounts the story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) and his encounter with temptation. When Yusuf (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was seduced by the wife of the Egyptian minister, he firmly resisted her advances and said, (Quran 12:23)
Indeed, he (your husband) is my master who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed
Yusuf's unwavering determination to resist temptation demonstrates the importance of overpowering negative habits and desires.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to strive for lofty stations by conquering their negative habits. It reminds us that spiritual growth requires self-discipline and the ability to resist the allure of sinful behavior. By overpowering our negative habits, we can attain higher levels of righteousness and draw closer to Allah.
For example, let us consider the habit of lying. Lying is a negative habit that can damage relationships, erode trust, and distance us from Allah. By consciously making an effort to overpower this habit, we can cultivate truthfulness and integrity in our character. This will not only strengthen our relationships with others but also bring us closer to Allah, who is the ultimate source of truth.
Similarly, the habit of procrastination can hinder our productivity and prevent us from fulfilling our obligations. By overpowering this habit and cultivating discipline and time management skills, we can achieve greater success in our personal and professional lives. This will lead to a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, as well as a closer connection with Allah, who encourages us to strive for excellence in all aspects of our lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of overpowering negative habits in order to attain lofty stations. It urges us to strive for self-discipline, self-control, and the ability to resist sinful behavior. By conquering our negative habits, we can elevate our spiritual status and draw closer to Allah. May Allah grant us the strength and determination to overcome our negative habits and attain the lofty stations that He has prepared for us.
