Hadith #2282

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اِنْعِمْ تُحْمَدْ۔" This can be translated into English as,

Confer favours and you will be praised.

Let us delve into the profound wisdom contained within this statement, and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.

The word (in'im) "اِنْعِمْ" in the Hadith refers to bestowing favors, showing kindness, and being generous towards others. It encompasses acts of charity, benevolence, and selflessness. By engaging in acts of kindness, we not only benefit others but also earn the praise and appreciation of those around us.

The word (tuhmad) "تُحْمَدْ" in the Hadith means to be praised, acknowledged, and recognized for one's good deeds. It signifies the positive response and gratitude that one receives when they extend their kindness towards others.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of bestowing favors and being generous towards others. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195),

And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse highlights the significance of spending in the way of Allah and doing good deeds. By conferring favors upon others, we not only benefit them but also gain the love and pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Our acts of kindness are not only recognized by Allah, but they also have a positive impact on society.

Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse highlights the supplication of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who sought Allah's support and sustenance. By conferring favors and being generous, we not only strengthen our own character but also receive divine assistance and blessings in our endeavors.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages us to engage in acts of kindness and generosity.
