مَنْ خالَفَ هَواهُ أطاعَ الْعِلْمَ۔
Whoever opposes his vain desire has followed [the path of] knowledge.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ خالَفَ هَواهُ أطاعَ الْعِلْمَ۔
This can be translated as,
Whoever opposes his vain desire has followed [the path of] knowledge.
Let us delve into the profound meanings of this Hadith in light of the Quran. Firstly, it is important to understand the key words in this Hadith. (khalafa) "خالَفَ" means to oppose or go against, (hawah) "هَواهُ" refers to vain desires or whims, and (ata'a) "أطاعَ" means to obey or follow. Lastly, (al-'ilm) "الْعِلْمَ" signifies knowledge.
The Quran emphasizes the significance of knowledge in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?'
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who lack it. Similarly, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
Now, let us reflect on the impactful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. By stating that
Whoever opposes his vain desire has followed [the path of] knowledge,
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of self-control and discipline. Vain desires are often driven by our lower instincts and can lead us astray from the path of righteousness. However, when we resist these desires and choose to follow the path of knowledge, we align ourselves with the divine guidance.
This Hadith encourages Muslims to prioritize knowledge and understanding over their own whims and desires. He demonstrated self-control and discipline even in the face of adversity, always prioritizing the pursuit of knowledge and the adherence to divine guidance.
The consequences of following this Hadith are profound. When we resist our vain desires and choose to follow the path of knowledge, we align ourselves with the teachings of Islam and the guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This leads to spiritual growth, moral development, and a closer connection with our Creator.
