مَوَدَّةُ الحَمْقى تَزُولُ كَما يَزُولُ السَّرابُ، وتُقْشِعُ كَما يُقْشِعُ الضَّبابُ۔
The friendship of a fool vanishes the way a mirage vanishes and is dispersed the way mist gets dispersed.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Affection And Friendship)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the transient nature of the friendship of a fool. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and deep understanding, uses vivid imagery to convey this message. Let us delve into the exegesis of this profound Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (mawaddatu) "مَوَدَّةُ" in the Hadith refers to friendship or affection. It signifies a bond between individuals based on love, care, and mutual understanding. However, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) specifically mentions the friendship of a fool, emphasizing the importance of discernment and wisdom in choosing our companions.
To understand the consequences of befriending a fool, let us turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Furqan, verse 27:
And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.
This verse highlights the regret and remorse that will be experienced by those who choose the wrong path and associate themselves with individuals who lead them astray.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 45, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability.
This verse illustrates the temporary nature of worldly relationships and the fleeting nature of worldly pleasures. Just as rainwater nourishes the earth, friendships may initially seem beneficial, but they can quickly dissipate like mist or vanish like a mirage.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) draws our attention to the consequences of befriending a fool. A fool lacks wisdom, understanding, and discernment. Their actions and decisions are often irrational and misguided. Associating with such individuals can lead us astray and hinder our spiritual growth. The fool's lack of insight and understanding can cloud our judgment, leading us away from the path of righteousness.
Moreover, the dispersion of mist and the vanishing of a mirage symbolize the fleeting nature of the friendship of a fool. Mist dissipates quickly, leaving no trace behind. Similarly, a mirage is an illusion that disappears upon closer inspection. Likewise, the friendship of a fool lacks substance and depth. It lacks the qualities of loyalty, trust, and sincerity that are essential for a lasting and meaningful companionship.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) thoughtful words serve as a reminder for us to choose our friends wisely. We should seek companions who are wise, knowledgeable, and righteous, as they will guide us towards the path of righteousness and help us grow spiritually. The Quran emphasizes the importance of surrounding ourselves with righteous individuals in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 28:
And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance. And let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring adornments of the worldly life, and do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair is ever [in] neglect.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be cautious in choosing their friends. The friendship of a fool is transient and lacks substance, just like a mirage that vanishes or mist that disperses. By surrounding ourselves with wise and righteous companions, we can ensure our spiritual growth and protect ourselves from the negative influences that may lead us astray. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to choose our friends wisely and guide us on the path of righteousness.
