اَلمَطَلُ أحَدُ المَنْعَيْنِ۔
Delay [in giving] is one of the two refusals.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Delay)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Delay [in giving] is one of the two refusals.
This concise statement carries profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims in their interactions and dealings with others.
Let us first delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word "matal" refers to delay or procrastination, while "ahadu" means one of, and "man'ayn" signifies refusals or denials. Therefore, the Hadith can be understood as emphasizing the negative consequences of delaying or procrastinating in fulfilling a request or obligation.
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran, which provides guidance on the importance of fulfilling our commitments and obligations promptly. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177),
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves.
This verse highlights the importance of fulfilling the needs of others and giving generously without delay. It emphasizes that true righteousness lies in fulfilling our obligations towards those in need, regardless of our personal attachments or desires. Delaying in fulfilling these obligations can be seen as a form of refusal, as it deprives others of their rights and denies them timely assistance.
Another verse that sheds light on the significance of promptness in fulfilling obligations is found in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.
This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling contracts and agreements promptly, without any delay or hesitation. Delaying in fulfilling contracts can lead to disputes and mistrust, ultimately causing harm to relationships and societal harmony.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we understand that delaying in fulfilling our obligations is not only a form of refusal but also a violation of the principles of righteousness and fulfilling contracts. It is a neglect of our responsibilities towards our fellow Muslims and a hindrance to the progress and well-being of society as a whole.
By fulfilling our obligations promptly, we demonstrate our commitment to the values of Islam and the teachings of the Quran. We uphold justice, compassion, and the spirit of brotherhood in our interactions with others. Promptness in fulfilling obligations also fosters trust, strengthens relationships, and promotes a harmonious society based on mutual respect and cooperation.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to avoid delaying or procrastinating in fulfilling their obligations. It highlights the negative consequences of such delays, which can be seen as a form of refusal. Through the guidance of the Quranic verses, we understand the importance of promptness in fulfilling our commitments, contracts, and obligations towards others. By doing so, we embody the principles of righteousness, strengthen our relationships, and contribute to the betterment of society as a whole. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to fulfill our obligations promptly and uphold the teachings of Islam.
