السَّخاءُ أنْ تَكُونَ بِمالِكَ مُتَبَرِّعاً وعَنْ مالِ غَيرِكَ مُتَوَرِّعاً۔
Generosity means being open-handed with your [own] wealth while being cautious with the wealth of others.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Generosity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the concept of generosity and its proper application. The word (generosity) "السَّخاءُ" refers to the act of giving freely and abundantly. It is derived from the root word "سَخَا" which means to be open-handed and liberal in giving. The word (open-handed) "مُتَبَرِّعاً" signifies being generous with one's own wealth, while the word (cautious) "مُتَوَرِّعاً" implies being careful and considerate when dealing with the wealth of others.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the virtue of generosity and encourages Muslims to give in His cause. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:245)
Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over?
This verse highlights the reward and multiplication of blessings for those who generously give in the way of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah reminds us, (Quran 17:26)
And give to the near of kin his due and [to] the needy and the traveler
This verse emphasizes the importance of providing for the needs of family members, the less fortunate, and those in need. It encourages Muslims to be generous and compassionate towards others, especially those who are in dire circumstances.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the balance between generosity and caution. It teaches us that while it is commendable to be open-handed with our own wealth, we must also exercise caution and respect when dealing with the wealth of others. This caution stems from the understanding that the wealth of others is a trust placed upon us, and we must handle it with care and responsibility.
For example, if someone entrusts us with their wealth, it is our duty to safeguard it and ensure its proper use. We should not misuse or squander it, but rather be cautious and responsible in managing it. This principle is in line with the Islamic concept of amanah (trust) and highlights the importance of integrity and honesty in financial matters.
Moreover, this Hadith teaches us the importance of understanding the boundaries of generosity. While it is praiseworthy to be generous, we should not go to extremes and deplete our own resources to the point of neglecting our own needs and obligations. Islam encourages moderation in all aspects of life, including generosity. As Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah, (Quran 17:29)
And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent
This verse reminds us to strike a balance between giving generously and ensuring our own financial stability.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the virtue of generosity and its proper application. It teaches us to be open-handed with our own wealth while exercising caution and responsibility when dealing with the wealth of others. This concept is supported by various Quranic verses that emphasize the rewards of generosity and the importance of fulfilling the needs of others. By following the teachings of this Hadith, Muslims can cultivate a spirit of generosity while maintaining a balanced and responsible approach towards wealth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody the qualities of generosity and caution in our lives.
