(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Knowledge is an honourable heritage and a universal blessing.

Let us delve into the significance of this statement in light of the Quranic teachings.

The word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ" in this Hadith refers to the comprehensive understanding and awareness of various branches of knowledge, including religious, scientific, and practical knowledge. It encompasses both theoretical knowledge and its practical application. Knowledge is a divine gift bestowed upon humanity, enabling us to seek truth, acquire wisdom, and navigate the complexities of life.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the significance of knowledge in numerous verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Zumar, verse 9, Allah says,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who lack it. Knowledge elevates individuals, enabling them to make informed decisions and contribute positively to society.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 269, Allah describes the importance of knowledge by saying,

He grants wisdom to whom He pleases, and whoever is granted wisdom is indeed given a great wealth.

This verse emphasizes that knowledge is a valuable treasure, enriching the intellect and enabling individuals to discern between right and wrong.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further states that knowledge is an (وِراثَةٌ كَريمَةٌ) "inheritance". This implies that knowledge is not merely acquired individually, but it is a legacy that is passed down from generation to generation. Just as inheritance is a valuable possession, knowledge is a precious heritage that should be cherished, preserved, and shared with others. It is through the transmission of knowledge that societies progress and flourish.

The Hadith also describes knowledge as a (نِعْمَةٌ عَمِيمَةٌ) "universal blessing". This phrase highlights the all-encompassing nature of knowledge. It is a blessing that transcends boundaries, cultures, and languages. Knowledge has the power to unite people, bridge gaps, and foster understanding among diverse communities. It is a blessing that brings enlightenment, empowers individuals, and contributes to the betterment of society as a whole.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, encourages Muslims to seek knowledge in all its forms. He sets an example for us to follow, as he was not only a courageous warrior and a just ruler but also a profound scholar. His knowledge encompassed various fields, including jurisprudence, theology, ethics, and philosophy.

The consequences of embracing knowledge are far-reaching. It enables individuals to distinguish between truth and falsehood, to challenge ignorance and superstition, and to contribute positively to their communities. Knowledge empowers individuals to make informed decisions, to seek justice, and to promote the well-being of humanity.

Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of seeking knowledge and continuously expanding our understanding. As Muslims, we should strive to acquire knowledge from authentic sources, both religious and secular, and apply it in our lives. We should also recognize the responsibility we have to pass on this knowledge to future generations, ensuring the preservation and dissemination of wisdom.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of knowledge as an honourable heritage and a universal blessing. It encourages Muslims to seek knowledge, preserve it, and share it with others. By embracing knowledge, we can elevate ourselves, contribute to the betterment of society, and fulfill our purpose as servants of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the wisdom and guidance to seek knowledge and utilize it for the benefit of humanity.
