Hadith #5500

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to not exceed the limits in our lust and anger, as doing so will degrade us. Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith and explore its profound implications in light of the Quran.

The word (tusrif) "تُسْرِفْ" in Arabic means to exceed the limits or go beyond what is permissible. It refers to indulging excessively in one's desires or passions. Lust, in this context, encompasses all forms of desires that lead to sinful actions, whether it be in matters of wealth, power, or physical desires. Anger, on the other hand, refers to an intense emotional response that can lead to harmful actions and the loss of self-control.

The Quran provides guidance on how to control our desires and anger. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:32),

And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.

This verse reminds us to restrain our desires and not to engage in any form of sexual misconduct. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining chastity and avoiding any actions that may lead to immoral behavior.

Furthermore, the Quran advises us to control our anger and respond with patience and forgiveness. In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse encourages us to exercise self-restraint and forgiveness, even in the face of provocation or injustice. It reminds us that controlling our anger and forgiving others are qualities beloved to Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith highlights the negative consequences of indulging excessively in our desires and anger. When we allow our lust to dictate our actions, we may engage in forbidden acts such as adultery, theft, or greed. These actions not only degrade our character but also distance us from the path of righteousness.

Similarly, when we let anger consume us, we may act impulsively and harm others physically or emotionally. This can lead to broken relationships, loss of trust, and a tarnished reputation. Moreover, excessive anger can cloud our judgment and prevent us from making wise decisions.

By restraining ourselves from exceeding the limits in our lust and anger, we can maintain our dignity and integrity as Muslims. We can cultivate self-control, which is a fundamental aspect of our faith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and his advice in this Hadith serves as a reminder for us to follow his example.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to refrain from exceeding the limits in our desires and anger.
