آفَةُ اليَقينِ اَلشَّكُّ۔
The bane of certitude is doubt.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Doubt And Misgiving)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "آفَةُ اليَقينِ اَلشَّكُّ۔" This can be translated as,
The bane of certitude is doubt.
Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
Firstly, it is important to understand the key words in this Hadith. (afeh) "آفَةُ" refers to a calamity or a destructive element. (al-yaqeen) "اليَقينِ" means certitude or absolute conviction. And (ash-shakk) "الشَّكُّ" signifies doubt or uncertainty.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of certitude and warns against the dangers of doubt. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15),
The believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.
This verse highlights that true believers are those who have firm conviction in Allah and His Messenger, without any doubt. They are unwavering in their faith and are willing to sacrifice their wealth and lives for the sake of Allah. Doubt, on the other hand, weakens this conviction and hinders one's ability to strive in the cause of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:28), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.
This verse reminds us of the power and ability of Allah to bring life from death. It instills in us the certainty of resurrection and the Day of Judgment. Doubt in these fundamental beliefs weakens our faith and undermines our commitment to righteousness.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder of the destructive nature of doubt. Doubt can infiltrate the heart and erode the foundation of faith. It leads to confusion, hesitation, and a lack of conviction. It hampers our ability to make decisions and take action in accordance with our beliefs.
For example, if a Muslim is plagued by doubt regarding the existence of Allah or the truthfulness of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), it can lead to a crisis of faith. This doubt may prevent them from fully embracing Islam and living a life in accordance with its teachings. It may hinder their ability to perform acts of worship sincerely and wholeheartedly.
Moreover, doubt can also have far-reaching consequences in our personal and social lives. It can breed mistrust, division, and conflict within Muslim communities. It can weaken the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, and hinder collective progress and unity.
To combat doubt, it is crucial to seek knowledge and understanding. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is renowned for his profound knowledge and wisdom. He emphasized the importance of seeking knowledge and acquiring certainty. By studying the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), we can strengthen our conviction and guard against doubt.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the destructive nature of doubt and the importance of certitude in our faith. Doubt weakens our conviction, hampers our ability to strive in the cause of Allah, and can have far-reaching consequences in our personal and social lives. It is incumbent upon us as Muslims to seek knowledge, strengthen our faith, and guard against doubt. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us unwavering certitude and protect us from the bane of doubt.
