اَلصَّمْتُ مَنْجاةٌ۔
Silence is a means of deliverance.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Silence)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الصَّمْتُ مَنْجاةٌ" which translates to
Silence is a means of deliverance.
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims in their daily lives.
The word (silence) "صَّمْتُ" refers to refraining from speaking or remaining quiet. It is a state of withholding one's words and opinions. The word (deliverance) "مَنْجاةٌ" refers to salvation, safety, and protection from harm or danger. It implies that silence can serve as a refuge, a shield, and a source of protection for individuals.
To understand the significance of this teaching, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:199),
Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.
This verse highlights the importance of choosing our words wisely and avoiding engaging with those who are ignorant or engage in negative behavior. By remaining silent in such situations, we protect ourselves from unnecessary conflicts and maintain our inner peace.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by saying,
Tell My servants to speak in a way that is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.
This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking in a manner that is kind, respectful, and beneficial. By practicing silence, we can avoid falling into the traps of Satan and prevent ourselves from engaging in harmful speech.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaching on the virtue of silence encourages Muslims to reflect on their words and actions. It reminds us that sometimes it is better to remain silent rather than engaging in unnecessary arguments or spreading negativity. Silence can be a powerful tool for self-control, humility, and wisdom.
Silence can also be a means of self-reflection and introspection. By refraining from speaking, we create space for contemplation and deepening our understanding of ourselves and our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It allows us to listen attentively to our inner voice and seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
In addition, silence can be a source of strength and resilience. When faced with adversity or criticism, remaining silent can demonstrate patience, maturity, and self-restraint. It allows us to rise above the negativity and maintain our dignity. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said,
Whoever remains silent, Allah will grant him wisdom.
This hadith further emphasizes the value of silence in acquiring wisdom and insight.
Moreover, silence can be a means of preserving unity and harmony within the Muslim community. By choosing to remain silent in situations of disagreement or conflict, we avoid escalating tensions and promote a peaceful atmosphere. This aligns with the Quranic injunction in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that silence is a means of deliverance. It encourages Muslims to carefully consider their words, to refrain from engaging in unnecessary arguments or spreading negativity, and to seek wisdom and guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His Messenger (ﷺ). By practicing silence, we can protect ourselves from harm, maintain inner peace, and contribute to a more harmonious and united Muslim community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to embrace the virtue of silence in our lives.
