كُنْ قَنِعاً تَكُنْ غَنِيّاً۔
Be contented and you will become rich.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Contentment And The Contented)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
كُنْ قَنِعاً تَكُنْ غَنِيّاً۔
This can be translated as,
Be contented and you will become rich.
Let us delve into the profound wisdom behind this statement and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (qanin) "قَنِعٌ" in this Hadith refers to contentment or satisfaction with what one possesses. It is the state of being pleased and grateful with the blessings that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us. It is important to note that contentment does not imply complacency or stagnation. Rather, it is a mindset that allows us to appreciate and make the most of what we have, while continuously striving for improvement.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the virtue of contentment in numerous verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 14:7)
And [recall] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse highlights the connection between gratitude and abundance. When we are content and grateful for the blessings we have, Allah increases our provisions and bestows upon us His bounties.
Furthermore, in Surah At-Talaq, Allah assures us, (Quran 65:2-3)
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.
This verse reassures us that Allah is the ultimate provider and sustainer. When we place our trust in Him and are content with what He has decreed for us, He will provide for us from unexpected sources and grant us sufficiency.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the importance of contentment in this Hadith. By cultivating contentment within ourselves, we attain a state of inner richness and fulfillment. This richness is not solely materialistic but encompasses spiritual, emotional, and intellectual aspects of our lives.
When we are content, we are free from the shackles of envy, greed, and constant desire for more. We are able to appreciate the blessings we have been granted, no matter how small they may seem. Contentment allows us to find peace and tranquility in our hearts, regardless of our external circumstances.
Moreover, contentment enables us to focus on the present moment and make the most of the opportunities that come our way. It motivates us to utilize our talents, skills, and resources to the best of our abilities, without being consumed by the pursuit of worldly possessions. This mindset fosters gratitude, humility, and a sense of purpose in our lives.
Conversely, the lack of contentment leads to a perpetual state of dissatisfaction and restlessness. It blinds us to the blessings that surround us and fuels a never-ending cycle of wanting more. This insatiable desire for accumulation often results in anxiety, stress, and a constant feeling of inadequacy.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to cultivate contentment in their lives. By being grateful and satisfied with what Allah has bestowed upon us, we open ourselves up to His abundant blessings and experience true richness in all aspects of our existence. May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to embrace contentment and lead fulfilling lives.
