مَنْ سَلا عَنْ مَواهِبِ الدُّنيا عَزَّ۔
One who does not think about the bounties of his world becomes powerful.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ سَلا عَنْ مَواهِبِ الدُّنيا عَزَّ۔
This can be translated as,
One who does not think about the bounties of his world becomes powerful.
Let us analyze the key words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (man) "مَنْ" means "one who" or "whoever." (sala) "سَلا" means "neglects" or "ignores." (an) "عَنْ" means "about" or "regarding." (mawahib) "مَواهِبِ" refers to the "bounties" or "gifts" bestowed upon an individual. Finally, (ad-dunya) "الدُّنيا" means "the world" or "this worldly life."
To understand the essence of this Hadith, we can refer to the Quran for further guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:18),
Whoever desires the immediate, We hasten for him from it what We will to whom We intend. Then We have made for him Hell, which he will [enter to] burn, censured and banished.
This verse highlights the consequences of solely focusing on the immediate gratifications of this world. It leads one to the punishment of Hellfire and eternal regret.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking the Hereafter while not neglecting the blessings and responsibilities of this world. It encourages Muslims to strike a balance between their worldly affairs and their spiritual journey.
Now, let us delve into the profound exegesis of the Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is teaching us that neglecting or ignoring the bounties of this world can lead to empowerment. This may seem contradictory at first, as we often associate power with material possessions and worldly achievements. However, the Imam is highlighting a deeper truth.
When a person becomes consumed by the desires and distractions of this world, their focus shifts away from the ultimate purpose of their existence – to worship and seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By neglecting the bounties of this world, one frees themselves from the attachment and dependence on material possessions. This detachment empowers them to prioritize their spiritual growth and connection with Allah.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is not advocating for a complete renunciation of worldly affairs. Rather, he is emphasizing the importance of recognizing the temporary nature of this world and not allowing it to distract us from our ultimate goal. By acknowledging the transience of worldly possessions and achievements, we become empowered to focus on what truly matters – our relationship with Allah and our preparation for the Hereafter.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon their priorities and the purpose of their existence. It encourages us to strike a balance between our worldly responsibilities and our spiritual journey. By recognizing the temporary nature of this world and not becoming overly attached to its bounties, we empower ourselves to live a life of purpose, righteousness, and devotion to Allah.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand the profound teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the strength to prioritize our spiritual growth over the fleeting pleasures of this world. May He guide us to use the bounties of this world in a way that pleases Him and benefits our Hereafter. Ameen.
