كُلُّ راض مُسْتَريحٌ۔
Every satisfied one is at ease.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Pleased And Satisfied)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "كُلُّ راض مُسْتَريحٌ۔" This can be translated as,
Every satisfied one is at ease.
In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of contentment and satisfaction in finding tranquility and peace in life.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and their implications. The word (raad) "راض" refers to someone who is content, satisfied, and pleased with their situation or circumstances. This person has accepted the decree of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and is not constantly seeking more or complaining about what they lack. They find contentment in what they have been blessed with.
The word (mustarih) "مُسْتَريحٌ" means to be at ease, to experience tranquility, and to find inner peace. It signifies a state of serenity and calmness that is attained when one is content and satisfied with their life. This tranquility is not dependent on external factors, but rather on the internal state of the individual.
The concept of contentment and finding peace through satisfaction is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Rad (13:28),
Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.
This verse highlights that true peace and tranquility can only be achieved through the remembrance of Allah and being content with His decree.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:152), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
This verse encourages us to remember Allah and be grateful for His blessings, which leads to a state of contentment and inner peace.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that true satisfaction and contentment are not found in material possessions or worldly achievements. Rather, it is an attitude of the heart, a state of mind that allows us to find peace and tranquility in any situation. When we are satisfied with what Allah has bestowed upon us, we free ourselves from the constant pursuit of more and find solace in the present moment.
This Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to cultivate contentment and satisfaction in their lives. It encourages us to shift our focus from what we lack to what we have been blessed with. By adopting an attitude of gratitude and accepting the decree of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we can find true peace and tranquility.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified this quality of contentment and knowledge. His deep understanding of the Quran and his unwavering faith in Allah allowed him to face numerous challenges with tranquility and composure. He found solace in the remembrance of Allah and was satisfied with whatever Allah decreed for him.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of contentment and satisfaction in finding true peace and tranquility. By being grateful for what we have and accepting the decree of Allah, we can free ourselves from the constant pursuit of more and find inner peace. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be satisfied and at ease, and may He bless us with contentment in all aspects of our lives.
