Hadith #4001

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "ثَمَرَةُ الدّينِ اَلأمانَةُ۔" This can be translated as,

The fruit of religion is trustworthiness.

Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (thamaratu) "ثَمَرَةُ" in this Hadith refers to the fruit or outcome of something. It signifies the result or consequence that is produced as a result of a particular action or quality. In this context, it represents the ultimate outcome or essence of religion.

The word (ad-dīni) "الدّينِ" refers to religion, which encompasses a comprehensive system of beliefs, practices, and values that guide the life of a Muslim. It is a way of life that encompasses all aspects of human existence, including personal, social, and spiritual dimensions.

The word (al-amānatu) "اَلأمانَةُ" refers to trustworthiness, honesty, and integrity. It signifies fulfilling one's obligations and responsibilities, both in the material and spiritual realms. It is a quality that is highly esteemed in Islam and is considered a fundamental aspect of a believer's character.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.

This verse highlights the significance of fulfilling one's commitments and obligations, which is a manifestation of trustworthiness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:85), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) mentions the story of Prophet Shu'aib (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and his people, who were known for their dishonesty and corruption. This serves as a warning against the destructive consequences of betraying trust and breaching contracts.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that trustworthiness is not merely a superficial quality, but rather the very essence of religion. It is the fruit that is produced when one truly embraces the teachings of Islam and embodies its values in their daily life.

When a person is trustworthy, they demonstrate their submission to Allah's commandments and their recognition of His presence in their lives. It is a manifestation of their belief in the unseen and their commitment to righteousness.

Conversely, a lack of trustworthiness leads to corruption, injustice, and societal decay. It erodes the bonds of trust and undermines the fabric of society. It breeds suspicion and animosity, creating divisions and conflicts among people. It also weakens the individual's relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), as it reflects a lack of sincerity and integrity in their faith.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the profound significance of trustworthiness in Islam. It is the ultimate fruit of religion, representing the essence of faith and the embodiment of Islamic values.
