— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الْعِلْمُ أشْرُ فَهِدايَة۔" which translates to

Knowledge is the most honourable guidance.

This wise utterance emphasizes the significance and nobility of knowledge in guiding individuals towards the right path.

Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. Firstly, (knowledge) "الْعِلْمُ" refers to the understanding and awareness of facts, principles, and truths. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. Knowledge is not limited to mere information, but it also involves comprehension and application.

The word (most honourable) "أشْرُ" highlights the elevated status and importance of knowledge. It signifies that knowledge holds a position of great dignity and respect. It is through knowledge that individuals can attain enlightenment, wisdom, and guidance.

The term (guidance) "هِدايَة" refers to the act of leading or directing someone towards the right path. It implies providing assistance and showing the way to righteousness and truth. In this context, knowledge is described as the ultimate form of guidance, as it illuminates the path for individuals, enabling them to make informed decisions and choices.

To further understand the significance of knowledge as the most honourable guidance, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and its role in guiding believers.

In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who lack it. It emphasizes that knowledge elevates individuals and sets them apart from those who are ignorant.

In Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah states,

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.

This verse highlights that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah. It is through knowledge that individuals are raised in ranks and rewarded.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:22), Allah says,

Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.

This verse emphasizes the importance of intellect and reasoning, which are essential components of knowledge. It implies that those who possess knowledge and utilize their intellect are more favored by Allah.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we can understand that knowledge holds immense value and is a means of guidance and elevation. It is through knowledge that individuals gain insight, make informed decisions, and navigate through the complexities of life.

Knowledge empowers individuals to distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood. It enables them to seek the pleasure of Allah and fulfill their responsibilities as Muslims. Moreover, knowledge equips individuals with the tools to contribute positively to society, solve problems, and promote justice and righteousness.

The pursuit of knowledge should be a lifelong endeavor for Muslims, regardless of their backgrounds or fields of study. It is through seeking knowledge that we can fulfill our purpose as human beings and strive for excellence in all aspects of life. May Allah bless us with the ability to acquire knowledge and use it for the betterment of ourselves and humanity as a whole.
