Hadith #6254

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الجَوْرُ تَبِعاتٌ۔" This can be translated as

Tyranny brings negative consequences.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (jawr) "جَوْرُ" refers to oppression, injustice, or transgression. It encompasses any act of wrongdoing or violation of rights. It is important to note that this term is not limited to physical harm but also includes emotional, social, and economic injustices. The word (tabi'atun) "تَبِعَاتٌ" is derived from the root word (taba'a) "تَبَعَ", which means to follow or to come after. In this context, it signifies the consequences or outcomes that follow as a result of tyranny.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the gravity of oppression and its detrimental effects on individuals and societies. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am (6:165),

And it is He who has made you successors upon the earth and has raised some of you above others in degrees [of rank] that He may try you through what He has given you. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful to the righteous.

This verse highlights that Allah has granted humans the responsibility of being successors on earth. However, this privilege comes with a test. Those who are given authority and power must use it justly and wisely. Oppression and injustice are contrary to the purpose of this divine trust and will result in severe consequences.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:56), Allah warns,

And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.

This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining justice and avoiding corruption. Oppression and tyranny disrupt the balance and harmony that Allah has established in the world. They lead to chaos, instability, and the deterioration of society.

Imam Ali's statement,

Tyranny brings negative consequences,

History has shown that societies built on oppression eventually crumble under the weight of their own tyranny. The French Revolution, for example, was a direct consequence of the oppressive rule of the monarchy.

Moreover, the negative consequences of tyranny extend beyond the immediate time and place. Injustice leaves a lasting impact on future generations. The oppressed and their descendants carry the scars of oppression, which can lead to cycles of violence, hatred, and social unrest. This perpetuates a vicious cycle of injustice that is difficult to break.
