Hadith #8971

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

إذا قَلَّ الخِطابُ كَثُرَ الصَّوابُ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of concise and precise speech, highlighting that when the quantity of speech decreases, the quality and accuracy of the message increases.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (khitab) "خِطابُ" refers to speech or discourse, while (sawab) "صَّوابُ" means accuracy or correctness. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is drawing our attention to the fact that when we limit our speech and choose our words carefully, we are more likely to convey our message accurately and effectively.

This profound teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) finds support in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking that which is best, indicating that concise and precise speech is not only beneficial but also a means to ward off the influence of Satan.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:70), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Or do they say, 'A poet for whom we await a misfortune of time?' Say, 'Wait, for indeed I am, with you, among the waiters.'

Here, Allah instructs Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to respond to the accusations of his opponents with brevity and clarity. This demonstrates the power of concise speech in conveying a strong and impactful message.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to reflect on the consequences of our words. When we speak less and choose our words wisely, we are more likely to avoid misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and unnecessary arguments.
