Opportunities pass by like the passing of clouds.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Opportunity And Its Loss)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الفُرَصُ تَمُرُّ مَرَّ السَّحابِ۔
This impactful saying can be translated as,
Opportunities pass by like the passing of clouds.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (furasa) "فُرَصُ" in this Hadith refers to opportunities or chances that come our way in life. These opportunities are like fleeting moments, just as clouds swiftly move across the sky. The word (marra) "مَرَّ" signifies the passing or transience of these opportunities. It emphasizes the temporary nature of these chances, reminding us that they do not stay for long.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seizing opportunities and making the most of them. In Surah Al-Hadid, Allah says, (57:20)
And know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allah has with Him a great reward
This verse reminds us that the blessings and opportunities we have in this world are tests from Allah, and we should utilize them wisely to earn His reward.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Asr, Allah says, (103:1-3)
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience
This verse highlights the importance of utilizing our time and opportunities for righteous actions and seeking guidance from one another.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant and proactive in recognizing and seizing the opportunities that come their way. Just as clouds swiftly pass by, opportunities in life also come and go quickly. If we fail to seize them, they may never return.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) thought-provoking saying urges us to reflect on our actions and decisions. It reminds us to be attentive and proactive in recognizing and utilizing the opportunities that Allah presents to us. Whether it is an opportunity for personal growth, seeking knowledge, helping others, or improving our relationship with Allah, we must be ready to seize these moments before they vanish.
Moreover, this Hadith teaches us the importance of being proactive in our pursuit of success in this world and the hereafter. It encourages us to be mindful of the passing of time and to make the most of every moment. By seizing opportunities, we can make significant progress in our spiritual and worldly endeavors.
The consequences of neglecting opportunities can be detrimental. If we let chances slip away without taking action, we may miss out on blessings, growth, and the potential to positively impact our lives and the lives of others. Therefore, it is crucial for Muslims to be aware of the transient nature of opportunities and to seize them with determination and wisdom.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can draw inspiration from the life of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself. Known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) never let any opportunity for learning or serving others pass him by. He was always ready to seize the moment and make the most of every chance that came his way. His exemplary life serves as a shining example for Muslims to follow.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that opportunities in life are fleeting, just like passing clouds. It urges us to be proactive, seize these chances, and make the most of them. By doing so, we can grow spiritually, contribute positively to society, and ultimately attain success in this world and the hereafter. May Allah grant us the wisdom and determination to recognize and seize the opportunities that come our way.
