حَقٌّ عَلَى العاقِلِ أنْ يَقْهَرَ هَواهُ قَبْلَ ضِدِّهِ۔
It is a right upon the intelligent one to vanquish his vain desire before his adversary.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
It is a right upon the intelligent one to vanquish his vain desire before his adversary.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of self-control and the need to overcome our own base desires and inclinations.
Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith. The word (right) "حَقٌّ" signifies an obligation or duty that one must fulfill. It is a moral responsibility that is incumbent upon every individual. (upon) "عَلَى" signifies the obligation placed upon the intelligent person to fulfill this right. (the intelligent one) "العاقِلِ" refers to a person who possesses wisdom, understanding, and the ability to discern between right and wrong.
The phrase (to vanquish his vain desire) "يَقْهَرَ هَواهُ" highlights the importance of self-control and the need to overcome our base desires. (vain desire) "هَوَى" refers to our whims, inclinations, and temptations that may lead us astray from the path of righteousness. It is the internal struggle that every individual faces in their journey towards self-improvement and spiritual growth.
The phrase (before his adversary) "قَبْلَ ضِدِّهِ" refers to the importance of overcoming our own desires before they become a source of conflict and opposition. It reminds us that our greatest enemy lies within ourselves, and if we do not conquer our own desires, they can become a hindrance in our pursuit of righteousness and cause harm to ourselves and others.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 50: (28:50)
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their own desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?
This verse highlights the danger of blindly following our desires without seeking guidance from Allah. It emphasizes the need to prioritize the commandments of Allah over our own inclinations.
In Surah Yusuf, verse 53, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says: (12:53)
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse acknowledges the inherent inclination of the human soul towards evil and the need for divine mercy to overcome it. It serves as a reminder that self-control and the suppression of our base desires are essential in our journey towards righteousness.
Reflecting on the Hadith, we can understand that the intelligent person is one who recognizes the importance of self-control and strives to overcome their own desires. By doing so, they prevent their desires from becoming an adversary and a hindrance in their pursuit of righteousness. This self-discipline allows them to make decisions based on wisdom and guidance from Allah, rather than being driven solely by their own whims and inclinations.
The consequences of neglecting this duty are grave. If we allow our desires to control us, we risk straying from the path of righteousness and falling into sin. Our desires can lead us to make decisions that are harmful to ourselves and others, both in this world and in the hereafter. However, if we prioritize the vanquishing of our vain desires, we can attain spiritual growth, strengthen our relationship with Allah, and become better individuals.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize self-control and overcome their own base desires. It highlights the importance of recognizing our own internal struggles and taking proactive measures to conquer them. By doing so, we can align our actions with the guidance of Allah and strive towards righteousness. May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to overcome our desires and fulfill this right upon the intelligent ones.
