لَقَدْ كاشَفَتْكُمُ الدُّنيا الغِطاءَ، وآذَنَتْكُمْ على سَواء۔
Indeed, this world has unveiled the cloak [of its disloyalty] and notified you all equally.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the transient nature of this world and its deceptive allure. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) begins by stating,
Indeed, this world has unveiled the cloak [of its disloyalty] and notified you all equally.
Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith.
The word (kashafatkumu) "كاشَفَتْكُمُ" is derived from the root word (kashf) "كشف", which means to unveil or uncover. Here, it refers to the world revealing its true nature and exposing its disloyalty. The word (ad-dunya) "الدُّنيا" refers to the temporal world, the materialistic realm that we inhabit.
The word (al-ghita'a) "الغِطاءَ" translates to "cloak" or "veil." In this context, it symbolizes the deceptive nature of the world, hiding its true reality and luring people with its temporary pleasures. The word (adhanatkum) "آذَنَتْكُمْ" means to notify or inform equally. It signifies that the world's disloyalty and transience are not limited to a specific group or individual but affect everyone equally.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the fleeting nature of worldly possessions and the importance of focusing on the eternal life to come. In Surah Al-Hadid, Allah says, (57:20)
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris
This verse emphasizes that the attractions of this world are temporary and fleeting. They may bring temporary pleasure and satisfaction, but ultimately they wither away like a plant that dries up and turns to debris. The world may seem alluring and promising, but it is merely a test and a means to attain the hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that the world is not a reliable source of contentment and fulfillment. It is a place of trials and tribulations, where the true nature of things is often concealed. The world may offer temporary happiness, but it is ultimately disloyal, as it cannot provide lasting satisfaction or salvation.
This Hadith encourages Muslims to detach themselves from the materialistic pursuits of this world and focus on the eternal life to come. It reminds us that true success lies in seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and preparing for the hereafter. By recognizing the transience and disloyalty of the world, we can avoid becoming ensnared in its illusions and instead prioritize our spiritual growth and connection with our Creator.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) impactful words serve as a wake-up call for Muslims to reflect on the purpose of their existence and the true nature of this world. It urges us to seek knowledge, engage in acts of worship, and strive for righteousness. By doing so, we can navigate through the trials and tribulations of this world and ultimately attain success in the hereafter.
May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize the true nature of this world and guide us on the path of righteousness. May we strive to detach ourselves from its illusions and focus on the eternal life to come. And may we be among those who are successful in both this world and the hereafter.
