Hadith #6091

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "أهْلَكُ شَيْء الطَّمَعُ۔" This can be translated as,

The most destructive thing is covetousness.

In this enlightening saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the grave consequences of excessive desire and greed.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "أهْلَكُ" refers to destruction or ruin, indicating the severe harm that covetousness can bring upon an individual. "شَيْء" means thing or matter, emphasizing that covetousness is indeed a tangible and detrimental entity. And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection.

This verse highlights the consequences of greed, indicating that withholding what Allah has bestowed upon us will only lead to regret and punishment in the Hereafter.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.

This verse advises Muslims to strike a balance between seeking the rewards of the Hereafter and fulfilling their worldly responsibilities. It cautions against desiring corruption and excessive wealth, as it goes against the teachings of Islam.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of the dangers of covetousness. Covetousness leads to a multitude of sins, such as dishonesty, envy, and injustice. This can lead to animosity, division, and even violence within communities.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautiful Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate contentment and gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encourages us to prioritize the pursuit of righteousness and the betterment of society over the accumulation of worldly possessions. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from the destructive consequences of covetousness and strive towards a more harmonious and just society.
