Through knowledge, wisdom is recognized.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالعِلْمِ تُعْرَفُ الحِكْمَةُ۔" which translates to
Through knowledge, wisdom is recognized.
This enlightening saying emphasizes the importance of knowledge in attaining wisdom.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. (knowledge) "عِلْمِ" refers to the acquisition of information, understanding, and awareness. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. (recognized) "تُعْرَفُ" means to be known, identified, or acknowledged. And (wisdom) "حِكْمَةُ" refers to the ability to apply knowledge in a manner that is beneficial and just.
The Quran provides numerous verses that highlight the significance of knowledge and its connection to wisdom. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 58:11)
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse emphasizes that knowledge is a means of elevation and distinction for believers.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Zumar, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 39:9)
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant. It emphasizes that knowledge is a distinguishing factor that allows individuals to comprehend and remember.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that knowledge is not merely the accumulation of facts, but rather the ability to apply that knowledge in a wise and beneficial manner. It is through knowledge that one gains the insight to make informed decisions and take appropriate actions. Wisdom, on the other hand, is the result of utilizing knowledge effectively and with discernment.
For example, a person may possess vast knowledge about medicine, but it is through the application of that knowledge in diagnosing and treating patients that wisdom is demonstrated. Similarly, a person may have extensive knowledge of Islamic teachings, but it is through the practical implementation of those teachings in their daily lives that wisdom is manifested.
The consequences of this Hadith are profound. It encourages Muslims to seek knowledge in all its forms, whether it be religious, scientific, or practical. By doing so, we not only increase our understanding of the world around us, but we also develop the ability to make wise decisions and contribute positively to society.
Moreover, this Hadith serves as a reminder that knowledge is not limited to a select few, but rather it is a lifelong pursuit for all Muslims. It encourages us to continuously seek knowledge and strive for personal growth and development. By doing so, we not only benefit ourselves but also become a source of guidance and inspiration for others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of knowledge in recognizing and attaining wisdom. It reminds us that knowledge is not an end in itself, but rather a means to acquire wisdom and apply it in our lives. As Muslims, we are encouraged to seek knowledge in all its forms, and through the pursuit of knowledge, we can gain the wisdom necessary to navigate through the complexities of life and make informed decisions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to seek knowledge and utilize it wisely.
