لا حافِظَ أحْفَظُ مِنَ الصَّمْتِ۔
There is no guardian that is more protective than silence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Silence)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لا حافِظَ أحْفَظُ مِنَ الصَّمْتِ۔
This can be translated as,
There is no guardian that is more protective than silence.
Let us delve into the profound wisdom behind this statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (hafiz) "حافِظَ" in this Hadith refers to a guardian or protector. It implies someone who safeguards and preserves something valuable. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the importance of silence as a powerful guardian.
Silence, in its essence, is the act of refraining from speech. It is a state of tranquility and restraint, where one chooses to withhold their words. By doing so, one can protect themselves from the potential harm that may arise from speaking without wisdom or thought.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the significance of silence and its positive impact. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:199),
Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.
This verse encourages Muslims to avoid engaging in futile arguments and to refrain from responding to ignorance with more ignorance. By maintaining silence, one can protect themselves from being drawn into unnecessary disputes and maintain their dignity.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the believers as those who
turn away from idle talk.
This verse highlights the importance of avoiding vain and meaningless conversations. By practicing silence, one can protect themselves from indulging in gossip, backbiting, and other forms of harmful speech that can damage relationships and tarnish one's reputation.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also reminds us of the power of silence in preserving our inner peace and spirituality. In Surah Al-Furqan (25:63), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) praises the servants of the Most Merciful as those who
walk upon the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say words of peace.
This verse emphasizes the virtue of responding to ignorance and hostility with words of peace and kindness. By choosing silence over reacting impulsively, one can protect their own serenity and maintain a higher moral ground.
Silence can also be a means of protecting others. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises the believers to
avoid suspicion as much as possible, for suspicion in some cases is a sin.
By remaining silent instead of spreading baseless rumors or assumptions, one can protect the reputation and honor of others. This act of guarding the dignity of others is highly regarded in Islam.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) impactful Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect on the power of silence. It encourages us to exercise restraint in our speech, to choose our words wisely, and to protect ourselves and others from the potential harm that can arise from reckless or harmful speech.
By embracing silence, we can cultivate a sense of inner peace, strengthen our relationships, and uphold the values of Islam. Let us strive to be guardians of our tongues and protectors of our own souls and the souls of others through the power of silence. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to practice silence when it is most needed and protect us from the perils of heedless speech.
