اَلتَفْريطُ مُصيبَةُ القادِرِ۔
Neglect is an affliction of the capable.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Neglect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "التَّفْرِيطُ مُصِيبَةُ الْقَادِرِ" which translates to
Neglect is an affliction of the capable.
This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the detrimental consequences of neglecting one's responsibilities and potential.
Let us delve deeper into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (At-Tafreet) "التَّفْرِيطُ" refers to neglect or disregard. It signifies the act of failing to fulfill one's obligations or duties, whether they are religious, social, or personal. This negligence can manifest in various aspects of life, such as neglecting one's prayers, neglecting the rights of others, or neglecting one's own self-improvement.
The term (Musibah) "مُصِيبَةُ" means affliction or calamity. It implies that neglecting one's responsibilities is not only a failure but also a source of harm and misfortune. It is a self-inflicted affliction that affects not only the individual but also those around them.
The word (Al-Qadir) "الْقَادِرِ" refers to the capable or the one who possesses the ability and potential to fulfill their obligations. This term emphasizes that neglect is not an excuse for those who have the capability to fulfill their responsibilities. It highlights the importance of utilizing one's abilities and resources to their fullest potential.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Isra (17:36),
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse emphasizes the importance of not neglecting seeking knowledge and understanding before engaging in any action. Neglecting to acquire knowledge can lead to harmful consequences and accountability before Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.
This verse highlights the obligation to fulfill our responsibilities and cooperate in acts of righteousness. Neglecting these obligations not only harms oneself but also hinders the collective progress of the Muslim community.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be proactive and diligent in fulfilling their obligations. Neglecting one's responsibilities not only leads to personal harm but also affects the overall well-being of society. It is a call to action, urging us to utilize our capabilities and potential to make a positive impact in the world.
For example, neglecting the obligation of prayer can lead to a spiritual void and distance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Neglecting the rights of others can result in broken relationships and a lack of harmony within the community. Neglecting one's own self-improvement can hinder personal growth and hinder the ability to contribute effectively to society.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our responsibilities and utilizing our capabilities to their fullest potential. Neglecting our obligations is not only a failure but also a self-inflicted affliction that harms ourselves and those around us. Let us strive to be proactive, diligent, and responsible Muslims, fulfilling our duties and making a positive impact in the world. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and protect us from the affliction of neglect.
