(Ghurar al-Hikam: The One Who Surrenders)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "مَنِ اسْتَسْلَمَ سَلِمَ۔" This can be translated as,

One who surrenders [to Allah] remains safe.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful saying in light of the Quran.

The word (istaslama) "استسلم" is derived from the root word (salam) "سَلَمَ", which means peace, safety, and submission. It signifies complete surrender and submission to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When a person surrenders themselves to Allah, they acknowledge His sovereignty and submit to His commands with sincerity and devotion.

This Hadith reminds us of the importance of surrendering to Allah's will in order to attain true peace and security. It is through this surrender that we find protection from the trials and tribulations of this world and the Hereafter. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran:

(Quran 11:23)

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds and humbled themselves to their Lord - those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide eternally therein.

Here, Allah emphasizes that true believers are those who surrender themselves to Him, perform righteous deeds, and humble themselves before Him. Such individuals will be granted eternal bliss in Paradise.

Furthermore, the Quran states:

(Quran 31:22)

And whoever submits his face to Allah while he is a doer of good - then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold. And to Allah will be the outcome of [all] matters.

This verse highlights the significance of submitting to Allah while doing good deeds. It assures us that by surrendering ourselves to Allah and adhering to His guidance, we have firmly grasped the most reliable and unbreakable support. Our ultimate destiny lies in the hands of Allah, and He is the one who will determine the outcome of all matters.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that true safety and security can only be attained through complete surrender to Allah. When we submit ourselves to His will, we are protected from the harms of this world and the spiritual dangers that may lead us astray. By surrendering to Allah, we find solace in His mercy, guidance, and protection.

Surrendering to Allah does not mean passivity or inaction. It means actively seeking His pleasure and following His commands. It involves striving to fulfill our obligations as Muslims, performing acts of worship, and treating others with kindness and justice. Surrendering to Allah requires us to align our desires, thoughts, and actions with His divine guidance.

When we surrender to Allah, we experience a profound transformation in our lives. We become more aware of our purpose and the consequences of our choices. We develop a deep sense of trust in Allah's wisdom and plan for us. This surrender brings us inner peace, contentment, and a sense of security that cannot be found elsewhere.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of surrendering ourselves to Allah. It is through this surrender that we find true peace, protection, and security. By aligning our will with His, we attain a state of tranquility and become recipients of His abundant blessings. May Allah guide us all to surrender ourselves to Him completely and grant us the safety and peace that comes with it.
