إنَّ الزُّهْدَ فِي الجَهْلِ بِقَدْرِ الرَّغبَةِ فِي العَقلِ۔
Verily the renunciation of ignorance is proportionate to the desire for [knowledge and] intelligence.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Renunciation Of Worldly Pleasures)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Verily the renunciation of ignorance is proportionate to the desire for [knowledge and] intelligence.
This enlightening saying highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and renouncing ignorance. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word "zuhd" in Arabic refers to renunciation or detachment from worldly desires and attachments. In this context, it signifies the renunciation of ignorance. Ignorance here refers to the lack of knowledge and understanding. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that true renunciation of ignorance is directly proportional to the desire for knowledge and intelligence.
This Hadith reminds us of the Quranic teachings that encourage seeking knowledge and understanding. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who remain ignorant. It emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and the consequences of remaining in a state of ignorance.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse emphasizes that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah. It highlights the importance of acquiring knowledge and the rewards that come with it.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement urges Muslims to actively seek knowledge and strive for intelligence. It emphasizes that the more one desires knowledge and intelligence, the more they will renounce ignorance. This renunciation of ignorance is not limited to worldly matters but extends to spiritual and religious knowledge as well.
For example, a person who desires to understand the Quran and the teachings of Islam will naturally renounce ignorance by seeking knowledge through studying the Quran, attending religious classes, and engaging with scholars. Their desire for knowledge will drive them to renounce ignorance and strive for a deeper understanding of their faith.
Conversely, a person who lacks the desire for knowledge and remains ignorant may be more susceptible to misunderstanding, misinterpretation, and falling into misguided beliefs or practices. They may be easily swayed by false ideologies or become stagnant in their spiritual growth.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the importance of intellectual growth and critical thinking. Seeking knowledge and intelligence enables individuals to think critically, analyze situations, and make informed decisions. It empowers Muslims to navigate the complexities of life and contribute positively to society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and renouncing ignorance. It reminds us that the desire for knowledge and intelligence is directly proportional to the renunciation of ignorance. By actively seeking knowledge, Muslims can deepen their understanding of Islam, strengthen their faith, and contribute positively to their communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the desire for knowledge and the wisdom to renounce ignorance.
