لاتَفْعَلْ ما يَضَعُ قَدْرَكَ۔
Do not do that which will degrade your status.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Status And Worth)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لاتَفْعَلْ ما يَضَعُ قَدْرَكَ۔
which translates to
Do not do that which will degrade your status.
This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds great significance and can be understood through the lens of the Quran.
The word (yada'u) "يَضَعُ" in the Hadith refers to something that diminishes or lowers one's worth or status. It implies engaging in actions or behaviors that bring about disgrace, humiliation, or a loss of dignity. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to refrain from such actions in order to preserve their honor and elevate their status in the eyes of Allah.
This guidance from Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) aligns with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of maintaining one's dignity and avoiding actions that lead to degradation. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah says, (Quran 17:37)
And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height
This verse reminds us to be humble and not to boast or act arrogantly, as it diminishes our status in the sight of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 49:11)
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers
This verse emphasizes the importance of respecting others and refraining from actions that degrade or belittle them. It highlights that such behavior is not befitting of a believer and can lead to a loss of status in the eyes of Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their actions and their impact on their own self-worth and reputation. Engaging in actions that degrade one's status can have severe consequences, both in this world and the hereafter. For example, spreading false rumors, engaging in backbiting, or indulging in immoral behavior tarnishes one's character and diminishes their standing in society. It can lead to a loss of respect, trust, and credibility.
On the other hand, striving to uphold one's dignity and honor brings about numerous benefits. It earns the respect and admiration of others, strengthens relationships, and allows one to be a positive influence in society. Moreover, maintaining a high moral standard and avoiding actions that degrade one's status is a means of seeking the pleasure of Allah. It reflects a deep understanding of the value and sanctity of the self, as well as a commitment to living a life in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be cautious of their actions and to avoid engaging in behaviors that degrade their status. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of maintaining dignity and avoiding actions that lead to degradation. By adhering to this advice, Muslims can strive to elevate their status in the sight of Allah and lead a life of honor and righteousness. May Allah guide us all to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and grant us the strength to uphold our dignity and honor.
