مَنْ أطاعَ هَواهُ باعَ آخِرَتَهُ بِدُنْياهُ۔
Whoever yields to his vain desire has sold his Hereafter for his worldly life.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ أطاعَ هَواهُ باعَ آخِرَتَهُ بِدُنْياهُ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
Whoever yields to his vain desire has sold his Hereafter for his worldly life.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this wise utterance in light of the Quran. The key word in this Hadith is (yields/obeys) "أطاعَ". This word implies submission and compliance to one's desires, whims, and inclinations. It refers to the act of following one's own desires without considering the guidance of Allah and the teachings of Islam.
Allah warns us in the Quran about the dangers of following our desires without restraint. In Surah Al-Jathiyah (45:23), Allah says,
Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah? Then will you not be reminded?
This ayah highlights the consequences of blindly following one's desires. When a person prioritizes their own whims over the guidance of Allah, they become misguided and lose the ability to perceive the truth. Their hearts and minds become veiled, and they are left without any guidance. Such a person is at risk of losing their connection with Allah and jeopardizing their Hereafter.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes the gravity of this act by stating that the one who yields to their vain desires has (sold their Hereafter for their worldly life) "باعَ آخِرَتَهُ بِدُنْياهُ". This metaphorical expression highlights the severe consequences of prioritizing worldly desires over the eternal life in the Hereafter.
In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:86), Allah warns us about those who exchange the guidance of Allah for worldly gains, saying,
Those are the ones who have bought the life of this world [in exchange] for the Hereafter, so the punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be aided.
This ayah serves as a reminder that those who prioritize their worldly desires over their spiritual growth and obedience to Allah will face severe consequences. They will not find solace or support in the face of punishment.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize that it serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to constantly evaluate their intentions and actions. It urges us to resist the temptations of our desires and to prioritize the pursuit of righteousness and the Hereafter over temporary worldly pleasures.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his deep knowledge and wisdom, implores us to be mindful of our choices and to strive for a balanced approach to life. By resisting our vain desires and aligning our actions with the teachings of Islam, we can safeguard our Hereafter and attain success in both this world and the next.
May Allah guide us all to resist our vain desires and grant us the strength to prioritize the Hereafter over the fleeting pleasures of this world. Ameen.
