كُلُّ عافِيَة إلى بَلاء۔
Every well-being is [headed] towards affliction.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Well-Being)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
كُلُّ عافِيَة إلى بَلاء۔
This can be translated into English as,
Every well-being is [headed] towards affliction.
Let us first delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (afa'iyah) "عافِيَة" refers to well-being, prosperity, or a state of being free from harm or affliction. It encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The word (balaa) "بَلاء" refers to affliction, trial, or hardship. It represents challenges and difficulties that a person may face in their life.
To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:2),
Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?
This verse reminds us that trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of our journey as Muslims. It is through these tests that our faith is strengthened and our character is refined.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse emphasizes that trials come in various forms, be it fear, hunger, loss of wealth, or even loss of loved ones. However, those who remain patient and steadfast will be rewarded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The statement
Every well-being is [headed] towards affliction
highlights the transient nature of worldly blessings. It reminds us that no matter how prosperous or content we may feel, we should be prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. This Hadith serves as a reminder that life is a test, and with every period of ease, there will inevitably come a period of hardship.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense wisdom and knowledge, understood the reality of this world. He recognized that the nature of life is such that no one can escape the trials and tribulations that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has decreed for us. Instead of being disheartened by this reality, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to embrace it and prepare ourselves for the challenges that lie ahead.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for us to be grateful for the blessings we have, but also to be mentally and spiritually prepared for the difficulties that may come our way. It teaches us to have a balanced perspective on life, recognizing that both well-being and affliction are part of the divine plan. By understanding this, we can navigate through the challenges of life with patience, resilience, and trust in Allah's wisdom.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
Every well-being is [headed] towards affliction
serves as a profound reminder for Muslims. It encourages us to appreciate the blessings we have, while also preparing ourselves for the trials and tribulations that are an inevitable part of life. By understanding this reality and approaching challenges with patience and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we can navigate through life's difficulties and grow closer to our Creator. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to face every trial with grace and patience.
