فِي التَّسْليمِ إيمانٌ۔
In submission there is faith.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Submission To The Will Of Allah)
Bismillah, All praise is due to Allah, the Most High, the Most Merciful. We seek His blessings and peace upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states, "فِي التَّسْليمِ إيمانٌ۔" which translates to
In submission there is faith.
Let us delve into the meaning and significance of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (tasleem) "تَسْلِيم" in Arabic refers to submission, surrender, or resignation. It encompasses the act of willingly submitting oneself to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and accepting His decree with complete trust and reliance. It is a state of complete surrender to the divine wisdom and guidance.
To understand the depth of this statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:13)
And when it is said to them, 'Believe as the people have believed,' they say, 'Should we believe as the foolish have believed?' Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know it not.
This verse highlights the importance of submitting to the faith as the believers have done. It emphasizes that true faith lies in accepting and embracing the teachings of Islam without questioning or doubting. It is through submission that one attains true faith.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:170)
And when it is said to them, 'Follow what Allah has revealed,' they say, 'Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing.' Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided?
This verse highlights the importance of submitting to the guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) rather than blindly following the traditions and practices of our forefathers. It emphasizes the need to submit to the truth and not be swayed by societal or cultural norms. True faith lies in submitting to the divine guidance, even if it goes against our personal inclinations or the customs of our ancestors.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,
In submission there is faith,
encapsulates the essence of these Quranic teachings. It reminds us that true faith is not merely a superficial belief, but rather a deep-rooted conviction that is manifested through our actions and submission to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
When we submit ourselves to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we acknowledge His infinite wisdom and knowledge. We recognize that He knows what is best for us, even when we may not fully comprehend His plans. This submission is an act of humility and trust in the divine decree.
By submitting to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we align our will with His and strive to live our lives in accordance with His guidance. This submission is not a sign of weakness, but rather a display of strength and conviction in our faith. It requires us to let go of our own desires and ego, and to surrender ourselves completely to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The consequences of this submission are profound. It allows us to find peace and contentment in our hearts, knowing that we are in alignment with the divine will. It frees us from the burdens of worldly attachments and desires, enabling us to focus on our spiritual growth and connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Moreover, this submission strengthens our faith and deepens our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It opens the doors of divine blessings and mercy, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises in the Quran, (Quran 31:22)
And whoever submits his face to Allah while he is a doer of good - then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,
In submission there is faith,
reminds us of the profound connection between submission and faith. It emphasizes the importance of surrendering ourselves to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and accepting His guidance with complete trust and reliance. Through this submission, we attain true faith and experience the peace and blessings that come with it. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to submit to His will and strengthen our faith.
