Hadith #4004

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Three things are the consolidators of religion: chastity, piety and modesty.

Let us delve into the meanings of these important words and explore their significance in light of the Quran.

Firstly, (العفة) "chastity" refers to purity and abstinence from any form of immorality or indecency. It encompasses both physical and moral aspects, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a pure heart, mind, and body. The Quran emphasizes the significance of chastity in numerous verses, such as Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:5-6), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the believers as those who guard their private parts except from their spouses or those whom their right hands possess.

Secondly, (الوَرَعُ) "piety" refers to righteousness, God-consciousness, and the fear of Allah. It entails adhering to the commandments of Allah and abstaining from anything that displeases Him. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of piety, such as in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is piety.

Lastly, (الحَياءُ) "modesty" refers to a sense of shame and humility, particularly in matters of morality and decency. It encompasses modesty in behavior, speech, and dress, reflecting a sense of dignity and respect. The Quran encourages modesty in Surah Al-A'raf (7:26), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best.

Now, let us reflect on the wise message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. These three qualities, chastity, piety, and modesty, are described as the "consolidators of religion."
