Hadith #11379

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

He is drawing in large buckets [from the well] of his vain desire and exerting a lot of efforts for his worldly life.

This Hadith highlights the excessive attachment of individuals to their worldly desires and the efforts they make to fulfill them.

Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith. The word (mātiḥan) "ماتِحاً" refers to drawing or extracting water from a well. It signifies the relentless pursuit of fulfilling one's desires, symbolized by the act of drawing water. The word (ʿarbi hawāhu) "عَرْبِ هَواهُ" refers to one's vain desires or whims. It represents the worldly desires that captivate individuals and distract them from the path of righteousness.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes that individuals exert a great deal of effort in pursuing their worldly desires. The phrase (kādiḥan saʿyan) "كادِحاً سَعْياً" underscores the intensity of their efforts. This highlights the fact that people often invest significant time, energy, and resources in the pursuit of worldly gains, neglecting their spiritual growth and the ultimate purpose of their existence.

To understand the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly reminds us of the temporary nature of worldly possessions and the importance of prioritizing the hereafter. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says: (3:14)

Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return.

This verse highlights the allure of worldly desires and possessions, which can easily distract individuals from their spiritual journey. It serves as a reminder that while worldly pleasures may bring temporary enjoyment, the true and everlasting reward lies with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Another verse that resonates with the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Kahf, where Allah says: (18:45)

And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability.

This verse beautifully illustrates the transient nature of worldly life. Just as rainwater nourishes the earth and brings forth vegetation, it eventually dries up and disperses. Similarly, the pleasures and pursuits of this world are fleeting and perishable. They cannot provide lasting fulfillment or true happiness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to reflect on their priorities and the purpose of their existence. It urges us to be cautious of becoming excessively attached to worldly desires and to strive for a balance between our material and spiritual pursuits.

When individuals prioritize their worldly desires over their spiritual growth, they risk losing sight of their true purpose and the ultimate goal of attaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This imbalance can lead to a life of dissatisfaction, emptiness, and spiritual deprivation.

On the other hand, when individuals prioritize their spiritual development and seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), they find true contentment and fulfillment. By aligning their actions and intentions with the teachings of Islam, they cultivate a sense of purpose, inner peace, and a meaningful connection with their Creator.
