(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lust)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الشَّهَواتُ تَسْتَرِقُّ الجَهُولَ۔" This can be translated as,

Lustful desires enslave the ignorant.

Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (shahawat) "شَهَوَاتُ" refers to lustful desires or passions that arise within a person. These desires can encompass a wide range of human inclinations, such as the desire for wealth, power, fame, or physical pleasure. They are often driven by the ego and can lead individuals astray from the path of righteousness.

The term (tastariqqu) "تَسْتَرِقُّ" means to steal or rob. In the context of this Hadith, it signifies how these lustful desires take control over the individual, overpowering their intellect and rationality. They become enslaved to their desires, losing sight of what is truly important in life.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the dangers of succumbing to our desires in several verses. In Surah Yusuf (12:53), Allah says,

And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.

This verse highlights the inherent inclination of the human soul towards evil desires. If left unchecked, these desires can lead us astray.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah reminds us,

But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance from Allah and not allowing our desires to dictate our actions. When we let our desires control us, we become ignorant of the true purpose of our existence.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, warns us about the consequences of being enslaved by our lustful desires. When we allow our desires to take over, we become ignorant of the consequences of our actions. We lose sight of the moral and ethical principles that should guide us in our interactions with others and in our pursuit of success in this world and the hereafter.

For example, when someone becomes consumed by the desire for wealth, they may resort to unethical means to acquire it, such as cheating, stealing, or exploiting others. In doing so, they disregard the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize honesty, justice, and compassion. Their ignorance blinds them to the fact that true success lies in righteousness and the satisfaction of Allah, not in material possessions.

Similarly, when individuals are driven by their lustful desires for physical pleasure, they may engage in immoral and illicit relationships, disregarding the sanctity of marriage and the boundaries set by Allah. They become ignorant of the emotional and spiritual consequences of their actions, as well as the harm they cause to themselves and others.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),

Lustful desires enslave the ignorant,

serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be vigilant against the overpowering influence of their desires. By reflecting on the teachings of the Quran and seeking guidance from Allah, we can protect ourselves from being enslaved by our lustful desires. We must strive to cultivate self-control, wisdom, and knowledge, so that we may make choices that align with the principles of Islam and lead us towards true success in this world and the hereafter. May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to overcome our desires and remain steadfast on the path of righteousness.
