ضادُّوا الكُفْرَ بِالإيمانِ۔
Counter disbelief with faith.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Disbelief)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "ضادُّوا الكُفْرَ بِالإيمانِ۔" This can be translated as
Counter disbelief with faith.
In this beautiful saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of responding to disbelief or kufr with unwavering faith.
To understand the depth and significance of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (counter) "ضادُّوا" implies a proactive and assertive response, indicating that Muslims should actively confront and challenge disbelief. (disbelief) "الكُفْرَ" refers to the rejection or denial of faith, which can manifest in various forms such as atheism, polytheism, or hypocrisy. Finally, (with faith) "بِالإيمانِ" signifies the need to combat disbelief by strengthening and upholding one's own faith.
The Holy Quran provides us with numerous verses that support and elaborate on the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 256:
There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejects false deities and believes in Allah has grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
This verse highlights the importance of countering disbelief with faith, as it affirms that true guidance comes from Allah and that belief in Him is a steadfast foundation that cannot be shaken.
Another verse that aligns with the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 2:
The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely.
This verse emphasizes the role of faith in countering disbelief. When believers hear the mention of Allah and His verses, their hearts are filled with awe and their faith is strengthened. This serves as a reminder that faith is not passive but rather an active force that can overcome disbelief.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement encourages Muslims to respond to disbelief with unwavering faith. By countering disbelief with faith, we can effectively challenge and overcome the doubts and misconceptions that may arise. This approach is not limited to intellectual debates but extends to our actions, character, and interactions with others.
When faced with disbelief, we should strive to embody the teachings of Islam and demonstrate the beauty and truth of our faith through our conduct. By living our lives in accordance with the principles of Islam, we become living examples of the power and impact of faith. Our actions can inspire others to question their own beliefs and ultimately lead them towards embracing the truth.
Furthermore, countering disbelief with faith also has profound consequences for our own spiritual growth. When we actively engage with our faith and seek to deepen our understanding, we strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This, in turn, leads to increased tranquility, contentment, and guidance in our lives. By countering disbelief with faith, we not only defend our own beliefs but also nurture our own souls.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
Counter disbelief with faith
urges Muslims to actively confront and challenge disbelief by strengthening their faith. This exhortation aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of unwavering belief in countering disbelief. By embodying the principles of Islam and living our lives in accordance with our faith, we can inspire others and experience spiritual growth. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to counter disbelief with faith and be a source of guidance for others.
