Nothing reforms faith like piety.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Piety)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Nothing reforms faith like piety.

Let us delve into the meaning of this statement and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (sulh) "صلح" in Arabic, which is translated as "reforms" in English, carries a deeper connotation. It implies the act of rectifying, improving, or restoring something to its proper state. In the context of faith, it signifies the process of purifying and perfecting one's belief and practice.

The word (deen) "دين", translated as "faith," encompasses the entirety of one's religious commitment and way of life. It includes beliefs, rituals, morals, and social responsibilities. Thus, the Hadith emphasizes that nothing can bring about a true and lasting reform in one's faith like (al-wara') "الورع", which is translated as "piety."

Al-wara' refers to a state of consciousness and mindfulness, where one is constantly aware of Allah's presence and seeks to please Him in all aspects of life. It entails refraining from actions that are doubtful or potentially sinful, even if they are permissible. It is a higher level of righteousness that goes beyond mere adherence to religious obligations.

The Quran provides numerous verses that highlight the significance of piety in reforming and strengthening one's faith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous (أتقاكم) of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes that true nobility and superiority lie not in one's lineage or social status, but in their level of righteousness and piety. It is the degree of taqwa, which is the essence of piety, that distinguishes individuals in the sight of Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:14), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

The Arabs say, 'We have believed.' Say, 'You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'

This verse highlights the importance of true faith penetrating the heart and transforming one's actions. It emphasizes that mere verbal declaration of faith is not sufficient; rather, it is the obedience to Allah and His Messenger that completes and strengthens one's faith. This obedience can only be achieved through piety and constant mindfulness of Allah's commands.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in the Hadith emphasizes the pivotal role of piety in reforming and perfecting one's faith. It serves as a reminder that true faith is not merely a set of rituals or beliefs, but a comprehensive way of life that is rooted in consciousness of Allah and adherence to His commands.

When one cultivates piety, they become more aware of their actions, intentions, and the consequences of their choices. This heightened consciousness leads to a transformation in behavior, as they strive to align their actions with the teachings of Islam. Piety acts as a guiding light, preventing one from falling into sinful or doubtful acts and inspiring them to seek righteousness in all aspects of life.

The consequences of embracing piety are far-reaching. It leads to a deeper connection with Allah, increased self-discipline, and a sense of inner peace and contentment. It also has a positive impact on one's relationships, as it fosters honesty, integrity, and compassion towards others. Moreover, piety serves as a shield against the temptations of this world and safeguards one's faith from being corrupted or weakened.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) impactful Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of nurturing piety in our lives. It is through piety that we can truly reform and strengthen our faith, and strive towards attaining the pleasure of Allah. May Allah grant us the ability to cultivate piety and reform our faith, and may He bless us with His guidance and mercy.
