— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Inward Thoughts And Feelings)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
صَلاحُ السَّرائِرِ بُرْهانُ صِحَّةِ البَصائِرِ
which translates to
The goodness of inward thoughts is evidence of the soundness of insight.
This amazing Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of the purity of our inner thoughts and intentions as a reflection of our true insight and understanding.
To delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith, let us examine the key words and their implications. The word (salah) "صَلاحُ" refers to goodness, righteousness, and rectitude. It encompasses virtuous actions, intentions, and thoughts that align with the teachings of Islam. (sara'ir) "السَّرائِرِ" refers to the inward thoughts, secrets, and hidden intentions that reside within a person. These thoughts are not visible to others, but they have a profound impact on our character and actions. (burhan) "بُرْهانُ" signifies evidence, proof, or testimony. It indicates that the goodness of our inward thoughts serves as a testimony or proof of the soundness of our insight and understanding. (sihhati) "صِحَّةِ" denotes soundness, correctness, or validity. It implies that the goodness of our inward thoughts is an indication of the validity and correctness of our insight.
To support the exegesis of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for further guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes that true nobility and righteousness lie in the purity of one's heart and actions. It highlights the importance of inward righteousness as a criterion for superiority in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:18), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Indeed, Allah knows the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is Seeing of what you do.
This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is fully aware of our inward thoughts and intentions. He sees what is hidden from others and judges us based on our sincerity and righteousness.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we can understand that the goodness of our inward thoughts is not merely a reflection of our character, but also serves as evidence of the soundness of our insight and understanding. When our inner thoughts are filled with righteousness, piety, and sincerity, it indicates that our understanding of Islam is rooted in truth and guided by divine wisdom.
The consequences of this realization are profound. It compels us to constantly examine our inner thoughts and intentions, striving for purity and righteousness. It reminds us that true insight and understanding of Islam cannot be attained solely through superficial actions or outward displays of piety. Rather, it requires a deep and sincere connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), as well as a continuous effort to purify our hearts and minds.
By focusing on the goodness of our inward thoughts, we can develop a strong foundation for our faith and actions. It motivates us to seek knowledge, reflect on the teachings of Islam, and align our intentions with the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encourages us to be mindful of our thoughts and to constantly strive for self-improvement.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the goodness of our inward thoughts is a testament to the soundness of our insight and understanding. It emphasizes the importance of purifying our hearts and minds, as well as aligning our intentions with the teachings of Islam. By striving for righteousness in our innermost thoughts, we can strengthen our faith, deepen our understanding, and attain closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate goodness in our inward thoughts and grant us true insight and understanding.
