(Ghurar al-Hikam: Putting Trust In Allah)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), the Lord of all worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),

مَنْ تَوَكَّلَ لَمْ يَهْتَمَّ,

can be translated as

One who trusts in Allah does not get worried.

The key terms in this Hadith are (tawakkul) "تَوَكَّلَ" and (yahtamm) "يَهْتَمَّ". Tawakkul refers to placing one's trust and reliance upon Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), acknowledging His supreme power and wisdom in all affairs. Yahtamm signifies worry or anxiety, a state of mental unease often stemming from uncertainty about the future or outcomes.

The concept of tawakkul is deeply rooted in the Quran. In Surah Al-Imran, verse 159, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

So when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

This verse underscores the importance of making decisions and then placing complete trust in Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), knowing that He is the best disposer of affairs. Furthermore, in Surah At-Talaq, verse 3, it is mentioned:

And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.

This ayat reassures believers that Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is sufficient for those who trust Him, and He will fulfill His divine will.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound wisdom and deep understanding of the divine teachings, emphasizes the transformative power of tawakkul. Trusting in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) liberates a person from the shackles of worry and anxiety. When a Muslim truly places their trust in Allah, they recognize that all outcomes are part of His divine plan, and thus, they find peace and contentment in their hearts. This trust does not imply passivity; rather, it encourages proactive engagement with life's challenges while maintaining a serene reliance on Allah's wisdom.

For instance, consider a person facing financial difficulties. By practicing tawakkul, they actively seek solutions, such as finding employment or managing expenses, while trusting that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) will provide sustenance and ease their burden. This balance between effort and reliance ensures that they remain hopeful and resilient, rather than succumbing to despair.

The consequences of tawakkul are profound. It cultivates patience, gratitude, and a sense of inner peace. Muslims who embody this trust are less likely to be overwhelmed by life's trials, as they view each challenge as an opportunity for spiritual growth and a test of faith. Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are encouraged to examine their own levels of trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strive to deepen it, recognizing that true reliance on Him can transform worry into tranquility and uncertainty into certainty.

May we all be inspired by the wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to embody the essence of tawakkul in our daily lives, trusting in Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with unwavering faith and confidence.
