فَضْلُ الرَّجُلِ يُعْرَفُ مِنْ قَوْلِهِ۔
The merit of a man is known from his speech.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Virtues And Vices)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
فَضْلُ الرَّجُلِ يُعْرَفُ مِنْ قَوْلِهِ۔
This translates to,
The merit of a man is known from his speech.
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon the importance of their words and the impact they have on their character and reputation.
Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith by exploring the key words and their meanings. The word (fadl) "فَضْلُ" refers to excellence, virtue, or merit. It signifies the superior qualities or attributes that distinguish an individual. (ar-rajul) "الرَّجُلِ" translates to "the man," referring to any individual, regardless of gender, who possesses the ability to speak. Finally, (qawlihi) "قَوْلِهِ" means "his speech" or "his words."
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of speech in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah says,
And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.
This verse highlights the importance of speaking with kindness, truthfulness, and wisdom, as it promotes unity and guards against the influence of Satan.
Similarly, in Surah Al-Qalam (68:4), Allah says,
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
This verse praises the character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and serves as a reminder for Muslims to emulate his noble qualities. One of the most prominent aspects of the Prophet's character was his impeccable speech, which was characterized by honesty, compassion, and wisdom.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) aligns with these Quranic teachings, emphasizing the significance of speech in determining a person's merit. Our words have the power to shape our character, influence others, and leave a lasting impact. They can either elevate us to a higher spiritual level or lead us astray.
When we reflect on the consequences of our words, we realize that they can either build or destroy relationships, spread love or hatred, and promote peace or discord. For example, when we speak words of encouragement and support to our loved ones, we strengthen our bonds and create a positive environment. Conversely, when we engage in gossip, slander, or hurtful speech, we damage relationships and sow seeds of animosity.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, understood the power of speech. His eloquence and ability to convey complex ideas in a concise manner were renowned. His words were not only a reflection of his own merit but also a source of guidance and inspiration for generations to come.
As Muslims, we should strive to follow in the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by using our words wisely. We must be mindful of the impact our speech can have on ourselves and others. Let us choose our words carefully, speaking with kindness, truthfulness, and wisdom. By doing so, we can enhance our own merit and contribute to a more harmonious and virtuous society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that the merit of a person is known through their speech. Our words have the power to shape our character, influence others, and leave a lasting impact. By aligning our speech with the teachings of the Quran and the noble examples set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt, we can strive for excellence and contribute to a more virtuous and compassionate society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to choose our words wisely and may He purify our hearts and tongues.
