(Ghurar al-Hikam: Repentance And Returning (To Allah))
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
حُسْنُ التَّوْبَةِ يَمْحُو الحَوْبَةَ۔
This can be translated as,
Sincere repentance erases misdeeds.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (husn) "حُسْنُ" in this Hadith refers to "good" or "excellent." It signifies the quality of repentance that is sincere, genuine, and done with utmost devotion. It is not merely a superficial act, but rather a deep and heartfelt turning towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) seeking His forgiveness and mercy.
The term (at-tawbah) "التَّوْبَةِ" means "repentance." It is derived from the Arabic root word (tāba) "تَابَ", which signifies returning or turning back. In the context of this Hadith, it refers to turning back to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) after committing sins, seeking His forgiveness and striving to rectify one's actions.
The word (yamhu) "يَمْحُو" means "erases" or "obliterates." It implies the complete removal or annihilation of something. In this Hadith, it refers to the power of sincere repentance to wipe away and eliminate the consequences of our misdeeds. It highlights the immense mercy and forgiveness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), who, upon sincere repentance, forgives and erases our sins as if they never occurred.
The term (al-hawbah) "الحَوْبَةَ" refers to "misdeeds" or "sins." It encompasses all types of transgressions against the commands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It reminds us of our inherent human fallibility and the need for repentance to seek forgiveness and rectify our actions.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Furqan, verse 70:
Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them, Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the transformative power of sincere repentance, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises to replace our evil deeds with good ones.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Tahrim, verse 8, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow.
This verse highlights the importance of sincere repentance and its potential to lead to the forgiveness of our sins and the attainment of Paradise.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to all Muslims of the power of sincere repentance. It teaches us that no matter how grave our sins may be, if we turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with genuine remorse and a firm intention to change, He will forgive us and wipe away our misdeeds. This Hadith encourages us to reflect on our actions, seek forgiveness, and strive to improve ourselves.
Sincere repentance not only cleanses our souls but also has profound effects on our character and behavior. It motivates us to abandon sinful habits, rectify our relationships, and seek forgiveness from those we have wronged. It instills in us a sense of humility, gratitude, and reliance on Allah's mercy. It reminds us that no matter how far we may have strayed, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is always ready to accept our repentance and guide us back to the path of righteousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that sincere repentance has the power to erase our misdeeds. It emphasizes the importance of turning back to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with genuine remorse and seeking His forgiveness. Through the Quranic verses, we see that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises to replace our evil deeds with good ones and admits us into His mercy and blessings. Let us strive to embody the spirit of sincere repentance and continuously seek Allah's forgiveness in order to purify our hearts and attain His pleasure. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the ability to sincerely repent and seek His forgiveness.
