Hadith #7124

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ غَلَبَ هَواهُ عَقْلَهُ اِفْتَضَحَ۔

This can be translated as,

One whose vain desire overpowers his intellect is disgraced.

Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. The word (ghalaba) "غَلَبَ" means to overpower or overcome. (hawah) "هَوَاهُ" refers to vain desires or whims, while (aql) "عَقْلَهُ" signifies intellect or rationality. Finally, (iftadaha) "اِفْتَضَحَ" means to be disgraced or humiliated.

To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of using our intellect and not succumbing to our base desires. In Surah Yusuf, verse 53, Allah says,

And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.

This verse highlights the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil desires. Our intellect, on the other hand, is the divine gift that enables us to distinguish between right and wrong, and to make decisions based on reason and wisdom. Allah urges us to use our intellect to overcome the temptations of our souls.

Another verse that sheds light on the significance of controlling our desires is found in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 50. Allah says,

But if the truth had been in accordance with their desires, indeed the heavens and the earth, and whoever is in them would have been corrupted. Rather, We have brought them their message, but they, from their message, are turning away.

This verse highlights the consequences of allowing our desires to overpower our intellect. If we were to follow our whims without restraint, chaos and corruption would ensue. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, has provided us with guidance through His messengers and scriptures, so that we may resist the allure of our desires and adhere to the path of righteousness.

Now, let us reflect on the wise message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. It serves as a reminder that when our vain desires overpower our intellect, we are bound to face disgrace and humiliation. When we let our desires dictate our actions, we lose sight of what is right and just. Our decisions become clouded by selfishness, greed, and impulsive behavior.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the importance of self-control and rational thinking. He teaches us that true honor lies in mastering our desires and allowing our intellect to guide us towards righteousness.
