Hadith #3000

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لاداءَ أدْوَأُ مِنَ الْحُمْقِ۔

This can be translated as,

There is no ailment worse than foolishness.

In this profound statement, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the severity and detrimental nature of foolishness.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "أدْوَأُ" refers to an ailment or a disease, while "الْحُمْقِ" refers to foolishness or stupidity. He grants wisdom to whom He pleases; and whoever is granted wisdom is indeed given a great good.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:179), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

And certainly, We have created many jinn and mankind for Hell. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. They are like cattle, nay even more astray; those! They are the heedless ones.

This verse emphasizes the consequences of lacking understanding and rationality, equating such individuals to cattle who are devoid of guidance.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds great wisdom and serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek knowledge, understanding, and rationality. Foolishness can lead to grave consequences, both in this world and the Hereafter.
