The oppressed awaits reward [in the Hereafter].

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Oppressed)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "المظلوم ينتظر المثوبة" which translates to

The oppressed awaits reward [in the Hereafter].

This enlightening Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds deep significance and is in accordance with the teachings of the Quran.

The word (Al-Mazlum) "المظلوم" refers to the one who is wronged, oppressed, or treated unjustly. This can include individuals who have suffered from physical, emotional, or financial harm. It is important to note that the term "المظلوم" does not only encompass the Muslims, but it extends to all individuals who have been subjected to injustice.

The word (Yantathir) "ينتظر" means to wait or to expect. In this context, it signifies the anticipation of the oppressed for their reward and justice from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Despite the difficulties and hardships they face in this world, the oppressed remain patient, knowing that their ultimate reward lies in the Hereafter.

The concept of the oppressed awaiting reward is beautifully emphasized in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures the believers that He is fully aware of their struggles and that He will reward them for their patience and perseverance. In Surah Al-Nisa, verse 40, Allah says:

(Quran 4:40)

Indeed, Allah does not do injustice, [even] as much as an atom's weight; while if there is a good deed, He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward.

This verse highlights the divine justice of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and assures the oppressed that their suffering will not go unnoticed. Every act of injustice, no matter how small, will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment. On the other hand, Allah's reward for the good deeds of the oppressed will be multiplied and bestowed generously.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj, verse 60, Allah says:

(Quran 22:60)

And those who have been driven from their homes unjustly only because they said, 'Our Lord is Allah' - And if Allah had not repelled some people by means of others, the monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned would have been destroyed. And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.

This verse highlights the plight of those who are oppressed due to their faith. It reassures them that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will support and aid those who remain steadfast in their belief, even in the face of persecution. The mention of the places of worship being protected emphasizes the divine intervention and ultimate justice that awaits the oppressed.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that no matter how severe the oppression they face in this world, they should remain patient and steadfast in their faith. They should trust in Allah's promise of reward and justice in the Hereafter. This Hadith also serves as a call to action for Muslims to stand against oppression and injustice, as it is their duty to support and advocate for the rights of the oppressed.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the profound concept of the oppressed awaiting reward in the Hereafter. It aligns perfectly with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize Allah's justice and promise of reward for the oppressed. Muslims are reminded to remain patient and steadfast in the face of oppression, knowing that their ultimate reward lies with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This Hadith also serves as a call to action for Muslims to actively stand against oppression and advocate for justice in this world. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to support the oppressed and seek justice in all aspects of our lives.
