Hadith #7220

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

إنَّما العاقِلُ مَنْ وَعَظَتْهُ التَّجارِبُ۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

Indeed only he is intelligent who is admonished by experiences.

Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. The word (aql) "عاقِلُ" refers to someone who possesses intellect, wisdom, and understanding. It is a quality that enables a person to make sound judgments and decisions. The word (wa'azathu) "وَعَظَتْهُ" comes from the root word (wa'aza) "وَعَظَ", which means to admonish, counsel, or advise. It implies that the intelligent person is the one who learns from the lessons and experiences of life.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:2),

Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?

This verse reminds us that trials and experiences are an inevitable part of life. They serve as tests for our faith, character, and intellect. It is through these trials that we are given the opportunity to grow and develop.

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.

The consequences of not learning from experiences can be detrimental. If we fail to reflect on our actions and repeat the same mistakes, we limit our growth and hinder our intellectual development. True intelligence lies in recognizing the lessons that life presents us and using them as stepping stones towards personal and spiritual growth.
